Governor Nutter Killed In Montana Plane Crash
Montana Gov. Donald G. Nutter and five others died when a Montana Air National Guard C47 crashed into a timbered mountainside near Wolf Creek. The governor was en route to a Cut Bank speaking engagement and the wreckage was found in rugged snow with no survivors.

Tim Babcock 43 native of Minnesota succeeds Gov Donald G Nutter as Montana's 16th chief executive. Born Oct 27 1919 in Little Fork Minnesota he grew up on a Dawson County farm. He worked for Douglas Aircraft before military service in World War II earning a bronze star and three battle stars. He later owned Babcock Lee Petroleum Transport Co and moved from Glendive to Miles City in 1946 and entered politics as Custer County representative.

Couple Sought In Slaying of Ex-Butte Man
Wichita Falls Texas police sought a man and a woman seen with Air Force Staff Sgt Richard Reed 32 found shot and stabbed near a roadside park east of town. Reed a Butte Montana native had been attacked after resisting a hold up and was found dead Wednesday. An autopsy showed multiple fatal injuries including a heart and lung stab wound, two gunshots to the brain and two throat cuts. A composite sketch was released and the pair were last seen with Reed at a Wichita Falls nightspot. Reed’s service records note Montana political and civic roles and family background.

Proposals Sought For Disposal Of Montana Manganese Stockpile
Senators Mansfield and Metcalf announced that the General Services Administration will solicit proposals to dispose or convert about 351 500 tons of manganese ore stored at Butte and Philipsburg. Bid efforts target oxide ore at Butte carbonate ore at Butte and Philipsburg with options to convert to low carbon manganese. Proposals due by April 17 and payment may include accepting excess government materials in lieu of cash.

Cold wave advances east of divide with snow and freezing temps
A cold wave with northerly winds and snow moved into the extreme north portion Thursday and will push southward east of the divide by Friday. Temperatures drop to 10 below to 5 above in the north and east areas with highs Friday from 5 below to 5 above and 10 below in places. Occasional light snow Friday and Friday night with more on Saturday and easing warmth west of the divide.
