Contract Dispute Shifts Focus to Local Issues

Union representatives who struck Montana copper operations of Anaconda Co rejected the company wage, pension, health and welfare offer. Talks continue to end the 195 day strike with local meetings from today through Tuesday and a return to bargaining next Wednesday.

Anaconda Co Proposes Three Year Pay Rise Plan

The Anaconda Co issued a settlement offer to Montana union reps to end a seven month copper strike. It calls for wage increases of 31 to 44.5 cents per hour, higher pension, and expanded health and welfare contributions for a three year contract from Feb 1 1968 to Jan 31 1971. The joint union committee called the proposal skimpy and unacceptable, while mediation officials noted continued talks. Meetings are set in Butte Great Falls Anaconda with United Steelworkers locals and Metals Trades groups.

Union Rejects Anaconda Contract Proposal

The 109 member joint union bargaining committee unanimously rejected Anaconda Co. terms calling the offer skimpy and far below settlements in nonferrous metals. They agreed to local negotiations on unresolved issues and warned no contract will be signed while those problems persist.

Butte Council backs Model Cities grant bid and city work

Butte City Council unanimously endorses a comprehensive Model Cities program to revitalize slum and blighted areas and improve living conditions. Approval for planning funding and HUD information was given with Mayor Powers named as representative. The county commission approved the program and final applications are due at week’s end.

Highway signs and structures to be moved in Butte

The Montana Highway Commission orders 116 signs gas pumps and other structures relocated in Butte's interstate loop business district. Local merchants claim encroachment taxes funded these signs and question the ordinance conflict as City Council seeks planning board highway department clarification before bids can be let.

Federal panel named to help copper strike end dispute

The Labor Department named a three member panel to mediate the six months old copper strike. Secretaries Wirtz and Trowbridge selected panelists to meet with unions and producers in the dispute involving 26 unions and major copper firms. Butte Sailor Serves Aboard Enterprise In Korean Waters

Machinist's Mate 1 C John Viers of Butte serves as reactor mechanic aboard the USS Enterprise. The carrier, detoured after North Korea seized the Pueblo, will be stationed 12 miles off Wonsan in North Korea's waters. Viers is married to Linda Viers. they and their two children live with her mother Mrs. Robert McMurtrey. He has been aboard since November 1964.

Stevensville Man Killed in One-Car Missoula Area Crash

Elmer J. Reis, 48, of Stevensville died from injuries after a one car crash south of Missoula on U S 93 Tuesday night. Highway Patrolman John Driscoll stated Reis apparently tried to climb back to the road after the wreck and was found Wednesday morning.
