President faces lawmakers over a cash budget that would cut spending on water and highways while projecting a 4.3 billion deficit for 1968 and a 3.6 billion projected trust fund surplus. He seeks authority to sell 5.3 billion in government assets and mortgages.
The Montana Senate in Helena handles a flurry of bills. Lawmakers debate measures on spending, governance, and policy changes as the session progresses.
State highway commissioners approved seven Montana road and bridge contracts totaling 2 741 040, about 19.5 percent under estimates. The largest job is a 1 973 foot bridge over the Yellowstone River on the Glendive east section of Interstate 94, awarded to Sletten Construction Co of Great Falls. Walter Mackin & Son, Billings, won another big project for 134 856 as part of the Dawson County work.
Four jet injectors from the Atlanta Communicable Disease Control Center will be used at the Civic Center for measles immunizations in the Stop Measles drive. Dr William E Kane, a Stop Measles leader, demonstrates the gun as part of a campaign that immunizes the Kane children, including 4-year-old William Joseph Kane.
Senate sponsors SB244 seek to remove all engineering instruction from Montana Tech. Senator Carl Lehrind Jr. and Senator Robert Cotton back the bill as committee chair Senator Cotton studies the proposal. Butte lawmakers led by Rep John Healy oppose it, warning of loss to the college and calling for broader support.

Severe storms spawned by a warm January spell battered Missouri Illinois and Iowa killing at least six people and injuring more than two hundred. In Chicago a policeman was crushed by a brick wall and a farmer perished when his house collapsed. A boy died in Iowa as a twister destroyed his dwelling and St Louis County suffered extensive damage with at least twenty municipalities affected.
Peking Radio reports Mao Zedong’s followers seized northern Shansi after a massive clash involving tens of thousands of pro and anti Mao workers. Authorities allegedly declared emergency as fighting continued in Manchuria and southern cities. Taiyuan is the provincial capital with about 18 million residents in Shansi.
Butte experienced a harsh January day with a 32 degree spread in readings and a low of minus twenty one at the airport. Dick Arnold, a flight service specialist for the FAA, checked the gauge noting the frigid conditions. The -21 reading was the winter's lowest so far, surpassing the previous record of minus nine set on December 9.
