In Washington the Senate opened the year with a long night session as Southern Senators pledged a solemn covenant to block the anti lynching act. Senator Pepper led six hours of speech while Democratic Leader Barkley warned of continued lengthy sessions until the controversy is settled.
Three Spanish nationalist planes attacked the French navy torpedo boat La Pursuivant off Cerbere near Port Bou. The boat fired on the attackers as French coastal batteries and naval forces responded with anti air fire. Nationalist warships and eight planes clashed with loyalist forces in a mid afternoon engagement.
The Farm Security Administration regional office announced a committee of eight to select Montana counties for the farm tenant purchase program. Tom Horsford will chair. other members include J. C. Taylor, Lester Cole, Leo Doheney, R. R. Aland, F. H. Richardson, W. S. Bailey, W. C. Kirscher, and E. F. Lyman. Appointed by Secretary Henry A. Wallace, the committee will finalize loan clients under the Bankhead-Jones act.
Airliner with two passengers and three crew battled strong winds over southwestern New Jersey early today. Camden officials said Pilot Fred Jones reported only about 20 to 30 minutes of gas left after being aloft six hours minus six minutes.

A 10 ton rock rolled down a mountain striking the Elkhorn high school in Welch West Virginia injuring a teacher and three other students. The victims were Junior Hughes 16 of Crozier and Johnny Robinson 18 of Maybeury.
Bozeman January 24 members of the Montana State Farm Bureau began their annual convention in joint session with the Montana Extension Service holding its yearly conference at Montana State College.
The Butte Chamber of Commerce will mail about 30 organizations inviting them to post events on a calendar bulletin board in the chamber headquarters. Monthly and next month events will be posted in the front window, with a full year calendar for reference. This aims to prevent scheduling conflicts and aid residents with local activities.

Dakar Senegal Jan 24 Bruno Mussolini and two companions piloting Italian bombing planes landed here on the first lap of a goodwill flight to Rio de Janeiro. The planes are the same type used by young Mussolini in Spanish air raids.
A forecast for Montana shows generally fair conditions on Tuesday with warmer temperatures in the north central region. Wednesday turns partly cloudy with snow in the extreme west and warmer conditions east of the divide.
In Beaufort Wales Tuesday January 25 hundreds of residents fled or prepared to evacuate as two cracks appeared in the 15 foot thick Blaen Cwm dam in the Ebb Vale district of Monmouthshire threatening a potential flood of millions of gallons. Twenty five families evacuated in trucks carrying belongings while others stayed awake ready to leave at a moment's notice.
Ice swollen rivers and creeks forced more than 600 families from their homes in three states. One life was lost and dozens faced danger as highways and rail lines were blocked by rising waters after over two inches of rain fell and temperatures dropped.
Washington January 24 Chairman Cartwright Democrat Oklahoma of the House roads committee said a highway appropriations bill for 1940 and 1941 would be a lot more than the President asked. He noted hearings begin tomorrow on a bill authorizing as much as 1938 1939 allocations and would not drop the 1939 cancellation proposal until the committee finishes work.
Washington, Jan 24. Senators Hayden and O Mahoney proposed that 52 percent of future naval oil lease revenue be paid into the reclamation fund for irrigation works. The bill would transfer about 22 million dollars from leases since 1920, with 15 million available immediately to repay advances for reclamation. The appropriations committee also endorsed 39.75 million to pay 1937 sugar beet bonuses and about 34.5 million leftover for crop loans, while the House approved these items earlier. A New York adviser urged tax law changes to dissolve personal holding companies, a goal Roosevelt called desirable.
