Speculation centers on German strategy as Berlin nears fall. Analysts doubt Rundstedt will shed western divisions for the eastern front. Germany fields about 160 divisions on Russia, 80 in the west, with 25–30 in Italy and sparse reserves in Scandinavia amid Allied air disruptions.
Gen Douglas MacArthur announced Camp O'Donnell nine miles west of Capas fell to American forces in Luzon as Yanks moved toward Manila. Units from La Paz near Tarlac pressed east while heavy pounding hit positions north of Pozorrubio and at Mt Alava. Supplies were captured as American lines extended toward Santa Rosa and Rosario.
Soviet forces push along an 800 mile eastern front on day 12 of the winter offensive. Marshal Ivan Konev’s First Ukrainian army reaches the Oder in lower Silesia capturing Bernstadt Namsiau Karlsmarkt Bischofthal Muhlwitz and Tost. German defenses along the Oder may offer little obstacle as 200000 troops threaten the central German frontier.
Anaconda Copper Mining Company will distribute employees statements of earnings for 1944 at the Mines Pay Office 18 East Quartz Street on Thursday and Friday January 25 and 26 from 9 30 a m to 6 p m These statements aid in preparing Federal and State Income Tax Returns.
Washington reports the Internal Revenue Service will mail separate bills to about 4 million citizens who owe unforgiven income taxes from 1943. The total due is $900 million, with payments required by March 15 1944. The two tax processes remain separate to avoid confusing the 46 million other filers.
Lt Gen Kurt Dittmar warned on German radio that the Soviet winter offensive could take many days to halt and urged Germans to avoid western front optimism. He said countermeasures moved slowly and stressed the need to hit advancing wedges decisively while noting the eastern battlefield remains deep.
American forces recaptured St. Vith and entered Vianden on the German Luxembourg border sealing the escape doors from the Belgian bulge. U S First and Third Army tanks moved seven miles in a direct north south line as the Allied offensive centers on the Siegfried line. The Seventh Army fell back from Haguenau but retained the town while the French First Army opened a second offensive against the Colmar pocket below Strasbourg.
German radio dispatch from Guenther Weber reports bitter fighting in Haguenau forest as the American Rainbow division suffers heavy blows in Alsace. News agency notes the offensive is nearing its climax with strong German counterattacks.
Butte expresses shock and sadness as four of its sons serving with U S Army in Europe are listed among war casualties. Capt James S Bertoglio medical corps killed January 10 in Germany. Pfc Frank Dorville medical corps missing since December 20 in Luxembourg. Pfc Henry J Mueller engineers wounded January 3 in Luxembourg. Pfc William Toy ordnance wounded December 16 in Belgium.
Helena reports measures to create a Montana state aeronautics commission to regulate aviation operations during and after the war, plus a plan to amend chain store taxes to double rates. The House also considers highway debentures of 12 million dollars and a two cent cigarette tax with a one cent cigar tax.
Butte to see clear to partly cloudy conditions with little temperature change on Wednesday and a high near 35. West of the continental divide expect partly cloudy skies and a gradual rise to 28 to 35. East of the divide stays fair through Thursday with lows from 1 to 32 and highs 35 to 45, including Missouri headwaters.
Pfc. George E. Lee 23, paratrooper, was killed in action in Belgium on January 9. He enlisted October 9, 1943, trained at Fort Benning, and went overseas in May 1944. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Lee, prominent Wolf Creek ranchers, were notified.
Funeral services for Thomas J. Walker, noted former Butte attorney and longtime judge of the United States customs court in New York City, will be held at 10 o clock Wednesday morning at St Patrick church with burial in St Patrick cemetery. The casket arrived in Butte Tuesday noon as mourners learned of the death of Capt. Robert Louis Ameno, son in law of Postmaster General Frank C. Walker, the judge s brother, who died en route from New York.
The Senate military committee named Blaze, Col Elliott Roosevelt's mastiff, to a top priority in a broad review of travel priorities. The session questioned how the dog gained an A priority over servicemen on leave and whether others benefited from similar treatment.
