Allied negotiators accused the Reds of prolonging the Korean war and delaying truce talks while planning airfield power during an armistice. President Truman selected Lincoln MacVeagh current U S ambassador to Portugal as the next American envoy to Spain replacing Stanton Griffis who announced retirement Griffis, age 65, will leave after a decade in government service with a resignation date to be set later by the president.
Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee is expected to formally announce on Wednesday his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. News conferences are planned for 1 p.m. MST as supporters report a Kefauver boom in the northwest.
Senator Ecton reports the Office of Price Stabilization may review Montana potato ceilings and adjust if warranted after Montana growers submit data. Idaho’s ceiling is 3.85 per hundred pounds, Montana at 3.45, with Montana producers arguing for 4.73. Ecton cooperates to present Montana facts to OPS Washington.
Gen Dwight D Eisenhower told Allied correspondents that Western Europe must unite politically and economically to avert a Soviet move toward a third world war. He said a constitutional convention in Europe would help, and he ruled out UK inclusion in a regional army as a hindrance. He stressed economic union needs political cooperation for success.
A Lockheed Lodestar on a local test flight crashed on the 36th street side of Miami International Airport after a right engine failure. All five aboard were killed and the craft burned near the Eastern Air Lines terminal. Aircraft belonged to Aerodex Inc. victims include Benjamin Terry, Ross Baird, Herbert Britzsche, Frederick Eberle, and Hal Bazley. The crash is the airport's first fatal civilian accident since 1943.
TACOMA Wash Jan 22 The jury found Bill Smith Jr a former Burlingame Calif soda jerk guilty of first degree murder in the 1948 sex slaying of 17 year old Noreen Mc Nicholas The seven women and five men recommended the death penalty to be carried out in the state prison gallows with sentence to be passed later.
STILL SEEK PLANE MISSING FROM HAMILTON FIELD A military air transport C47 missing since December 26 with eight men aboard is still being searched for by planes from this base. A military spokesman said Tuesday.
President Truman eulogizes Judge Robert P. Patterson calling him a great American and public servant after Patterson died in a plane crash in Elizabeth New Jersey. He noted Patterson’s World War I heroism his WWII War Department leadership and his service as secretary of war under Truman.

Elizabeth New Jersey January 22 AP reports a storm driven crash of a silver Convair air liner into a frame apartment building near Newark. Former War Secretary Robert Patterson and at least 27 others died with 23 aboard the airliner and five more in homes. Rescue efforts recovered bodies as fire and smoke engulfed the scene. Patterson had been in Buffalo on business and joined the flight after canceling rail plans.

Robert P. Patterson, killed in the New Jersey plane crash, left a kitchen police duty post at Plattsburgh to take a 1940 appointment as assistant secretary of war. He rose to undersecretary, supervising a vast WW II procurement program, and later succeeded Stimson as secretary of war. At odds with some lawmakers, he backed lend-lease in 1941 and urged maintaining strong armed forces after the war.
Robert P. Patterson former secretary of war who died in a 1941 plane crash near Elizabeth Colorado was a familiar figure in Butte Montana. He spoke at the Montana School of Mines commencement on June 4 1941 receiving an honorary Doctor of Law degree from Dr F A Thomson the school president.
