Allied air power crushed nearly 3,000 German vehicles and tanks in the Ardennes retreat. U S Third Army pushed five miles, Luxembourg half of the salient deserted, and German resistance crumbled before the First Army in Belgium.
Russian forces moving west from War saw reach within 150 miles of Berlin, halfway to Moscow announced. The Moscow broadcast called this the decisive phase of the German front as Soviet troops press the offensive toward the German capital.
The State Department said the United States has asked Moscow to protect and arrange release of American prisoners held by Germany as Russian advances continue. War department officials expect the procedure used in Romania and Bulgaria with Russians caring for and releasing men to American authorities. No clear count on how many may be freed or already captured. earlier estimates place over 1,000 officers held at Oflag 64 near Inowroclaw. London reports Britain prisoners will be protected after liberation. Unofficial estimates say about 40,000 British prisoners are in Silesia camps.
United States Third Fleet airmen destroyed 140 Japanese war planes and damaged ships and ground installations around Formosa and nearby islands in a major January strike. Adm. Nimitz noted a significant ship casualty and heavy enemy air opposition, with ships burning at Takao and several Formosan airfields hit. Also reported was a Washington note on Stilwell possibly becoming Army ground forces chief, replacing Lear.
General MacArthur reported that American ground forces in Luzon have captured Capas and moved toward Manila, with the I and XIV corps comprising the left and right wings. Santa Monica fell, Capas sits about 10 miles north of Clark Field, as air and long-range bombers strike Japanese targets and Formosa airfields.
A Melbourne dispatch reports Pieter H. W. Sitsen died Sunday night in Sydney at 61. He headed the Netherlands delegation of UN A R A in the southwest Pacific and was a key figure in the new Netherlands East Indies government under acting Gov Gen H. J. Van Mook. Sitsen left the Indies in 1942 and later worked in the United States before going to Australia last November.
Allied HQ says Canadian forces of the Eighth army repulsed a German raiding party two and a half miles northeast of Alfonsine in the eastern Po valley after a artillery curtain. The Fifth army front saw German artillery fire near Milinetto south of Bologna while 17 Allied planes were missing. Mediterranean air forces flew over 1,500 sorties including heavy bombers over Austria and Yugoslavia.
Senator George introduces a bill to roll back Roosevelt 1942 order placing RFC and related agencies under the Commerce Department. The move aims to split the loan chief role, potentially easing Wallace’s confirmation as secretary of commerce.
