In New York four gunmen holed up in John and Al's Sporting Goods threaten to fight to the end during a siege that left Patrolman Stephen Gilroy dead and two other officers wounded. Police report the suspects, reportedly Muslims, store arms inside the shop as a standoff continues with hostages inside the battered store.
In a chaotic thief incident Sam Rosenblum escaped amid gunfire as the attack unfolded. Police freed two hostages, Michael Zayers and Judy Malavet. Zayers delivered the gunmen’s request for medical supplies, while Malavet said a gunman was wounded and lying on the floor spitting up blood.
United Steelworkers Local 6002 in Anaconda passed a resolution demanding a legislative investigation of the workmen's compensation division and the replacement of division administrator James J. Carden and safety director Roy Jameson. The union also urged the legislature to reject the division's bill transferring OSHA control to state hands by next Jan. 1. Cascade County assembly urged senators to oppose Carden's reappointment citing safety concerns.
Helena AP reports the Senate Highways Committee approved an amended daytime speed limit measure with a do pass. The bill, with 31 sponsors, would raise daytime limits to 75 mph on all roads while keeping 65 mph on controlled access highways by night and 55 mph on other roads. The panel cited a $57,900 cost to post daytime limits.
Gen. Alexander Haig Jr concluded peace consultations in Saigon and flew to Seoul to brief Nixon on ally views of the Vietnam accord. He met with President Thieu, planned talks with South Korea’s Park, and then would visit Washington. Talks with Kissinger and Le Duc Tho in Paris resume Tuesday to finish the text.
A Montana Power Co. spokesman said a malfunction at an east side substation caused a power outage in Helena, including the Capitol, for about 40 minutes from 12:04 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Louisville officer Martha Green, a 35 year old beat officer, crawled toward an Ozark Airlines DC-9 as a hijacker held a hostage and fired at windows. She traded herself for the hostage, then helped force the gunman to drop the weapon. Green was cut during the fall but unhurt. The hijacker, Pvt. Dennis V. Durkin of Pittsburgh, is facing charges.
Montana Tech and the Bureau of Mines face steep two year budget cuts as HB 55 trims total funding 7.9 percent to 3.57 million while regents propose a gentler 3.3 percent rise to 4.00 million. Tech President DeMoney warns current levels may not sustain operations amid rising costs and falling enrollment.
End of June 1974 to 1975 figures show college budget rising to 3 531 744 and Bureau of Mines to 1 001 150, a combined 21 and 4.6 percent increases respectively. DeMoney, with McLeod and Burt, pleaded before a joint subcommittee on finance and claims in Helena, noting HB 55 could cut totals and stressing the need for funds to avoid cuts, while cautioning against near-closure scenarios.
