Lyndon Baines Johnson swore the presidential oath at 12 03 p m beneath the Capitol dome promising to lead a nation toward justice liberty and union. He urged rejecting old wounds and hatreds and pledged to conquer poverty ignorance and discrimination with Mrs Johnson holding his Bible.
President Johnson speaks of rapid change and vows to end poverty hunger sickness and ignorance before this generation ends. He urges shared responsibility and rejects reopening old wounds as he renews the oath of office in Washington.
President Johnson’s inaugural parade ran late but drew a huge 1.2 million crowd along 52 bands and 15 000 marchers. Johnson paused to greet his alma mater Southwest Texas State College band amid tight security.
President Johnson delivers an inaugural address from the Capitol rostrum after a peaceful ceremony. He pledges to fight waste and injustice at home while urging active leadership abroad to promote liberty and aid those in need.

Chamber dinner convenes at 7 PM in the Silver Bow Ballroom Finlen Hotel with Joe Foss addressing attendees. Master of ceremonies R A Poore, new chamber president Dr John A Newman introduces directors, and retiring directors receive plaques.
Butte city council unanimously opposed Montana bills to abolish Daylight Saving Time and to convert Montana School of Mines to a vocational technical school. Alderman Terry Kelly urged keeping Mines unchanged while the council directed its legislative committee to protest in Helena.
In Helena Montana the Senate passed a bill banning daylight saving time by a 50 to 5 vote sending it to the House where fate was deemed certain. Four other bills cleared with no opposition including fence requirements for junkyards and a permanent stream protection law.
Airman Timothy E. Kinkade 21 of Painesville Ohio died when his car crashed into a bridge over an irrigation ditch 23 miles west of Glasgow at 3 30 am. Passenger Gerald Bellis 21 of Salem Ohio sustained a concussion a broken rib and back injuries and was treated at Glasgow Deaconess Hospital in fair condition. Both airmen were attached to the 9th wing and were returning to Glasgow. The Montana traffic toll for 1965 rose to six with this crash.
State Rep. Jack Healy says he will help defeat HB113 which would rewrite the Montana school system removing the Butte unit from the University of Montana and creating a vocational technical college. Healy, a Silver Bow Democrat, asserts Mines should stay in the system and be expanded, and notes opposition from House Education members.
