Montana discusses and exposes front organizations tied to communism and fascism as the state reels from a recent protest. Arvo Fredrickson heads a local Communist group that aimed to hoodwink the Montana Legislature by using labor unions and farmer groups as fronts.
Adult scouters from across the Silver Bow area council gather at 6 30 tonight in the Finlen hotel to hear Dr Curtis L Wilson speak on Intellectual and Moral Preparedness and to hear the annual scouting report. Frank L Riley council president will preside.
Montana Rep. Toomey announced plans to repeal the direct primary law and to substitute a convention based nomination system modeled after Colorado. The measure aims to allow all electors to participate, preserving convention rules, with party candidates chosen at conventions. The day included killed hunting negligence bill and a Townsend act endorsement, while Senate debated foreign policy in secrecy.
Butte merchants launch a public safety crusade titled Save Lives Drive Carefully endorsed by the Montana highway patrol and the National Safety Council. The effort aims to cut 1941 traffic deaths in Butte after sharp January increases and notes 1940 deaths and numerous injuries.

Ticket sellers for the Roosevelt birthday ball at the Masonic temple will attempt to dispose of 1000 tickets by next Saturday night. The Silver Bow chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis announced the drive at a meeting led by Chairman Andrew Pettet. Proceeds fund research and local needs. the chapter holds a trust fund for outbreaks in Butte. Tickets cost 1 per couple.
Fred eric E. Humphreys, 57, a World War I brigadier general who resigned his Army commission, died in Miami on January 20 1944. A West Point graduate from the 1906 class, he was noted as an early fires Army pilot.
