A night fire destroyed six cars in the Butte Cab and Transfer garage at 8 45 p m on East Park street. Firemen from the day shift battled for nearly three hours, delaying the spread as crowds of about 2000 gathered. Fire Chief Martin called it the worst in years as flames roared from the roof and smoke hampered locating the flames. Nearby tenants moved belongings to safety as express wagons and taxis ferried out possessions.
Helena Jan 20 AP members of the house committee studying conditions at Deer Lodge state penitentiary Galen tuberculosis sanitarium and Warm Springs state hospital for the insane finished their survey and will meet to finish their report. Jones of Phillips said about 1500 patients occupy the insane hospital with 55 criminally insane. he argued such inmates should be kept in the penitentiary as they seem incurable.
Eighty-one passengers from the liner President Garfield were saved and transferred to the Pan-America after the ship ran aground on Manzanilla reef at the Bahamas. The transfer, completed by 7:45 pm, left the President Garfield’s baggage and the liner’s mail cargo aboard while the Pan-America headed toward Nassau. The wrecking tug Warbler assisted from Jacksonville, while the crew remained aboard the grounded vessel.
President-elect Hoover, after two weeks of meetings with Republican leaders, will depart Washington tomorrow by special train at 10 30 a m for Florida to rest and craft his inaugural address before taking office. He will arrive in Miami at 2 p m Tuesday and be welcomed by state officials before staying at the J Penney estate on Belle Island with Mrs Hoover. Dr Hubert Work and Janet Large join the party.
A Southern Pacific eastbound passenger train struck a small touring car at Finlay crossing, about 20 miles west of Sierra Blanca, killing eight Mexicans and seriously injuring a ninth. All car occupants were Mexican, mostly children, and the car bore a Big Spring license. Names of the dead were not learned.

In San Bernardino California a blinding snowstorm led to a collision between a plane piloted by aviation instructor Robert Crooks and an automobile driven by Frank Tice and his family. The plane wrecked in a roadside ditch after hitting the car’s radiator. all seven occupants suffered only minor bruises.
Pittsburgh dispatch reports Paul Jaworski, notorious leader of the Flathead payroll bandit mob, confessed a seventh murder to be carried out by electrocution in Bellefonte, Louisiana. He said he killed Jack Vasbinder in Detroit, dumped the body into Lake Erie, after learning Vasbinder was a drug addict. Vasbinder awaited death for killing a man who begged for a panhandle quarter.
Emerson School reigns in the fourth annual municipal ice carnival at Clark park. Led by 13 year old LeRoy Seymour with 15 points, Emerson rolled up 53 points to outpace Garfield at 25 and Longfellow, Madison, and Greeley among others. In the high school division Butte scored 20 to Central’s five as Seymour and Dan Miles delivered standout performances.
Union Springs, Ala. Jan. 20 Four negroes are being sought by a large local posse after a deputy sheriff, J. B. Barbaree, was killed and city marshal J. J. Bradham wounded. Officers arrested the quartet for violation of prohibition laws but they overpowered Bradham, shot Barbaree, then fled with Barbaree’s pistol.
St. Louis January 20 A prison term served laborers Charles Evans 50 and Walter Noonan 31 were stabbed to death early today in the yard of the Catholic church of Annuncion by church janitor Clemente Moreno 2 Mexican who said the men tried to steal sacred vessels from the temple Moreno is held for further inquiryinto the stabbings
London reports Cairo dispatches via Al Mokattem about a sensational Jerusalem find the mummy of King Solomon’s favorite wife Moti Maris. The tomb contains a golden coffin with jeweled crown and rings, a Hebrew scroll claiming Solomon’s handscript praise, and details of her death and loyalty. The article hints at palace burial and a plot by her Egyptian-born father to dethrone Solomon.
Detroit report states 39 year old William Burnstein leaped from a window on the twenty fifth floor of a downtown attorney’s office. His attorney J B Beckenstein said Burnstein had threatened to jump earlier over financial troubles.
New York Jan 20 Leon ard Cline novelist and short story writer was found dead in his west side apartment five days after his death medical examiner said he died of a heart attack. Two tenants discovered the body after no response to knocks. Cline had not been seen since last Tuesday night when he hosted a party. He recently moved from a farm near Willimantic Connecticut citing financial worries.
Four youths returning from a birthday party were killed when their car was struck by a Pennsylvania passenger train in Calumet City. The victims are Grace Walker 18 Hammond Indiana Rose Norman 21 Charles Wright 20 and James Lorenz 20 all of Chicago.
At Montrose near Niagara Falls a railroad train struck an automobile killing Frank Bretti 47 his wife Frances 42 and their sons John 17 and Joseph 7. Samuel Mancuso, the car driver, suffered a broken leg and head lacerations.
The unofficial American members of the committee of experts on German reparations will gather in New York tomorrow for informal talks before their Paris departure on February 1. Attending are J. P. Morgan Owen D Young with Thomas W Lamont and Thomas M Perkins as alternates. Sir Esme Howard extended invitations at Washington. The spokesman said details of subjects discussed would not be made public.
Police chief Jere Murphy and officers Rodda Kinney uncovered a large moonshine operation under a chicken coop at 1126 Utah avenue. An 85 gallon copper still, gas burners, nine barrels of mash and 60 gallons of whiskey were found, with 10 gallons seized as government evidence. Owner George Karas was arrested.
