He sketches future force growth including ICBMs, B52 wings, Skybolt missiles and Polabs submarines, and calls for defense spending of 2.1 billion while trimming reserve forces. He notes civil defense plans to identify about 50 million shelter spaces.

A 2000 strong European mob battled riot police in Oran Algeria injuring several and triggering a wider wave of clashes across the country. Police used tear gas and clubs while Zuave troops kept students apart as de Gaulle postponed withdrawal of two divisions from Algeria.
A two car collision early Friday in uptown Butte sent Mrs. Joseph Klapan to St James Community Hospital for observation with possible fractures of an arm and ribs. The crash occurred around 2 am at Arizona and Mercury. The other driver was Frank Marthe of Silver Star. Both cars sustained considerable damage.
A winter storm forecast to hit the Central Rockies this weekend could bring heavy snow to the Butte Dillon area and drop temperatures to near 17 below in spots. The U S Weather Bureau warned eight Rocky Mountain and Plains states of gusty winds and snow with near blizzard conditions in some areas.

Byrne, 44, of Portland, Oregon, was found innocent at trial.
President Kennedy and United Nations Acting Secretary General Thant held their first talks at the Waldorf Astoria during a lunch with Adlai Stevenson. Kennedy urged exports as a dollar-earning solution and defended ongoing U S overseas deployments while outlining major issues from West New Guinea to the Congo peace mission and the U N bond plan. White House aides called the meeting cordial.
The Soviet newspaper Trud accused Joshua Pratt, first secretary at the Israeli Embassy in Moscow, of spying for the CIA. Pan American Airways DC8 jetliner flies Boston to London in a record five hours six minutes aided by a 100 mile per hour tail wind. The flight carried 131 passengers and crew, shaving four minutes off the previous record.
