A severe Washington blizzard halted preinauguration festivities for President elect John F. Kennedy. The wind driven snow crippled events and disrupted plans for ceremonies tied to his swearing in.
Washington AP reports Friday events for the inauguration faced severe snow and wind. The Kennedy entourage encountered traffic jams and flight cancellations as snow accumulation threatened ceremonies.
A Mexican jet airliner crashed during takeoff from Idlewild Airport in a snowstorm. Police report 102 of 106 aboard escaped before the craft burned, with four bodies found and at least 26 survivors injured. The plane struck light poles and an automobile, ending in a marsh northeast of the terminal.
President-elect John F Kennedy met with President Eisenhower for over two hours to receive an up to date briefing on world problems. Gen Lyman Lemnitz er outlined military matters Kennedy will handle as commander in chief with talks spanning the Far East Africa Western Europe and the Caribbean.
Montana outlook shows east region fair with a cool breeze Saturday and highs from 20 to 30 in the northeast and 30 to 45 in the west and south. Friday night lows range 5 to 25 with a warming trend by Saturday. West side stays fair with valley fog patches and highs 25 to 40, Friday night lows 5 to 20. Extreme southern valleys may see 5 above to 10 below zero. Table notes maximums reflect 12 hours and minimums 18 hours ending at Livingston.

Firefighters battled a blaze that swept the second floor of the Montana Laundry and Dry Cleaning plant at Silver and Wyoming in Butte. The roof burned away and upper floors were reduced to rubble. No injuries were reported and damage estimates ranged into tens of thousands. The plant, with 40 employees, planned a temporary depot at 11 E Granite and continued pickup and delivery from Granite Street and a second depot at 2300 Harrison. Authority officials planned to inspect the structure and obtain rebuilding estimates after salvaging usable equipment. The fire was reported at about 6 20 a m by engineer Joe Peretti who alerted the night crew.
Helena lawyer Leif Erickson has been selected as assistant secretary of the Interior Department. The appointment, described as a metals and minerals post, would make him the youngest Montana Supreme Court figure when previously Richland County attorney at 32 held office. Erickson had been Democratic nominee for governor in 1944 and 1948 and for U.S. Senate in 1946.
The Montana Power Co. plans to file with the Federal Power Commission by mid February to build two Buffalo Rapids dams on the Flathead River south of Polson. Each dam would generate 120000 kilowatts for a total of 240000. Estimated costs run 15000000 to 20000000 per dam. The project would involve a tribal partnership since the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes own the land. the tribe would receive rental. Construction could begin after FPC license and tribal agreement, with local hiring emphasized.
Helena AP report says a bill to increase benefits for injured workmen cleared the Montana Senate on its busiest day of the 3 week session. The chamber, with 38 Democrats 17 Republicans and one Independent, advanced 10 new measures while killing six bills including a nighttime hunting ban on jackrabbits.
Montana House members introduced four bills to raise penalties for convict uprisings and violent crime. Proposals would add years to life for hostages, extend terms for deadly weapons, raise second degree assault punishments to six years with possible life on prior convictions, and prohibit stacking sentences.
A Montana money bill by Rep. Ed ward R. Picard would require county boards to raise deputy salaries to set levels tied to department heads. It targets Silver Bow County, where chief deputies would be paid 5147 dollars and other deputies 4876 dollars, with the current practice allowing only discretionary oversight.
Fidel Castro's government announced the capture of six Yankee invaders who sailed into Havana harbor. The six men were said to have joined an anti Castro training camp in Florida and were handed to a military tribunal that can pursue the death penalty.
In Silver Bow County the House debated Stimatz bill to raise two mills for Civic Center operation and maintenance. Rep Sullivan, opposing, urged protest noting no extra tax should fund centers and insisting efficient management.
