A severe cold snap hit Butte with temperatures plunging to 28 below at midnight and 18 below earlier as a blizzard-like storm lashed the area. Hugh Malloy, 30, former Bunny-Hug saloon co proprietor, was found dead in a snowdrift on Massachusetts Street near his sister's home.
A 250000 crowd gathers in the capital for Roosevelt's second inauguration, with visitors arriving by rail and celebrations across hotels and receptions. Weather forecasters predict possible rain or sleet tomorrow as officials note ongoing economic and policy challenges ahead.

He urged full cooperation with Europe and warned intervention in Spain harms humanity and politics. Madrid dispatch notes militiamen battling Fascists to secure El Cerro de Los Angeles and clear the Madrid Aranjuez highway.
Federal agent Harold Nathan and Tacoma area police broaden the manhunt for Charles Mattson’s killer. A Portland suspect with a 38 year old claimed to be involved, while Seattle officers receive about 60 tips daily. The suspect expressed violent intent against the Mattson family and claimed amnesia after prior confinement. The Mattson boy was kidnapped December 27 and found murdered January 11.
Congress approved and sent to the White House a bill extending until June 30 1939 the president power to devalue the dollar and to operate the 2 billion dollar stabilization fund. The Senate defeated a public audit amendment 43 to 32 and 93 to 59 in the House. The authority would expire January 30.
The forecast shows fair conditions in northern Montana with unsettled weather in the south on Wednesday. North central areas may see a slight warming trend, followed by generally fair skies and rising temperatures on Thursday.

A major snowstorm raged across western North Dakota parts of South Dakota and eastern Montana with strong winds creating large drifts blocking roads. Minnesota saw a sharp temperature drop with Bemidji recording 43 below after a 40 degree rise in 14 hours. In Aberdeen four inches of snow had fallen and drifted roads hinder motorists while Bismarck area roads were also blocked.
