Harrowing rescue attempt ends with Buckner dead
An air mail pilot Buckner from Boise Idaho died after a rescue party of La Grande men braved six foot snow drifts to reach his trapper's cabin near Cove Oregon. The group including Dr. R G McCall Harold OConnell airport manager Forest Ranger McCool and Charles Wrightson reached the cabin at dawn after a night in a blizzard. A trapper with Buckner waited with the pilot as another man hiked to Horse Ranch 15 miles away to notify officials. A brief telephone message confirmed Buckner's death. The body will be brought to La Grande.

Rare 1923 Liquor Seized and Dumped in County Vault
Old prohibition era liquor, 49 bottles totaling about 10 gallons, was emptied into the courthouse basement sewer yesterday. Confiscated as evidence years ago, the stock aged on shelves then rotted.
