Funding run dry stalls Montana tribal colleges history
In February 1978 a small group of tribal college leaders met in Washington to push for a bill that would fund Tribal Colleges and Universities. At the time, schools like Blackfeet and Fort Peck faced severe underfunding, operating in basements and trailers as advocates argued for federal support and cultural revitalization. Rep. Tyson Running Wolf later pursued related funding measures in 2021 and 2023, with limited success.
