Deer Lodge loses 64 to 63 to Butte Central in a close matchup. Dillon falls 67 to 44 at Livingston. Three Forks beats Manhattan 67 to 55. Whitehall wins 75 to 65 over Townsend. Philipsburg trips Drummond 80 to 73, while Lima defeats Willow Creek 53.
Federal Judge Warren Urbom ruled that neither the Sioux nor any Indian tribe retains sovereignty under U S law. He said treaties are superseded by federal statutes and conquest by the Army placed tribes under U S legislative power. The decision, while unlikely to affect current tribal governments, raises questions about self rule for reservations. Chief lawyer John Thorne said an appeal would follow.
Montana lawmakers push tax cut bills to repeal the 10 percent surtax raise the standard deduction and increase personal exemptions. The Budget Office says no impact on 1975 collections, with the largest cut totaling about 21 million dollars in fiscal 1976 and 1977.
Montana Senator John Manley pushes Senate Bill 36 to have the state reimburse Powell County for costs of prosecuting crimes committed at the Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge. He argues the prison benefits the state, not just local Deer Lodge, and that Powell County should not bear prosecutorial expenses. Weather note included.
Helena Mont Atty Gen Robert L Woodahl and Gov Thomas L Judge aide clash over amount spent on a workmen's compensation investigation. Mike Billings director of the governor's budget office says Woodahl may have exceeded the special probe budget by 16850 as of Dec 31 1974 and acted without Judge's knowledge. Special Asst Atty Gen Dick Dzivi calls the move a cheap political potshot and says Woodahl may have abused authority. Billings says he acted under law and not on political motive.
Helena AP report notes a Montana House committee approved a bill to open nearly all records of the Workmen's Compensation Division to public scrutiny without dissent. The measure faces a Senate counterpart with narrower exemptions for medical information. Dr. Jack McMahon backed the House approach but opposed the Senate version.
U.S. District Judge W D Murray ruled Madison County Montana must operate the federal food stamp program as long as it participates in the program. The suit by Thirsa Benson and Robert Hanlon claims low income and diabetes prevent a healthy diet. The ruling notes Montgomery County Indiana is the other holdout.
Four Johnson aides testified they knew of no presidential directive ordering the CIA to set up a 1967 domestic intelligence office. Richard Helms said the office existed “in response to the express concern of the President” though he did not name the president or date. William Colby later said Helms authorized it on Aug. 15, 1967.
Gov. Ed Herschler pledged state aid if needed as 44 United Mine Workers picketers were arrested near the Rosebud Coal Co. mine at Hanna. UMW organizer Jim Marketti warned of renewed picketing Monday after a new temporary restraining order limited demonstrations and a call went out to union locals in several states.
A Senate Aging Committee study finds kickbacks drive up drug spending in nursing homes. About 25 percent of the $300 million in drugs for residents is paid as kickbacks, with many residents on four to seven drugs daily including tranquilizers. The report cites improper testing, staff mismanagement, and weak FDA oversight, urging federal standards and stricter enforcement.
The CDC reports an influenza epidemic across the southeastern United States with deaths exceeding the seasonal threshold. Type A Port Chalmers strains spread to the Midwest and New England as the 530 predicted pneumonia and influenza deaths loom for the second week of January.
