Butte police and sheriff officials warn that inexpensive pocket scanners allow civilians to monitor emergency calls. Officials report misuse includes crowding scenes and tipoffs to suspects, and they are developing scrambler ideas to protect deputy communications.
President Ford will send a 1977 budget to Congress proposing a 4.2 billion increase in Social Security taxes effective Jan 1 1977. The combined employee and employer rate would rise to 6.15 percent with the maximum tax near 1 014 for high earners. The budget also calls for defense outlays of 101 billion, tax cuts, and changes to Medicare and state grants.
Helena Mont. AP Gov Thomas L Judge said the property tax initiative language was revised to avoid doubt and align with the 1972 constitution. The plan would reduce homeowner taxes by about 110 dollars yearly, costing the general fund roughly 14 million annually, with nearly 16 000 signatures needed for voter consideration.
Dr. Jerry Plunkett outlined a multi million dollar magnetohydrodynamics project at the Minerals Research Center in Butte Industrial Park. The institute expects staffing to grow from 13 to about 35 by February end as two or three buildings are evaluated for headquarters. In Heyburn Idaho a 65 year old woman Mrs Jack Strauss waded into freezing water to reach two boys who fell through ice. She saved Shawn by pushing a plank to him while Grady disappeared. Shawn later stood on pond bottom and edged to safety. The woman was treated at a hospital and sent home with rest orders.

Three 16 year old climbers from Washington state walked into Oregon City hospital after 16 days missing on Mt Hood. Frostbite affected two. the group read their Bibles, dug a snow cave, and survived on pancake mix and melted snow as weather hampered rescue efforts. They had left Dec 31 for a five day hike and realized they were lost around Jan 3.
