A Butte scene reports 18 year olds Fred Malesich and Larry Burton returning from a country drive with two lynxes they shot near the Dickey Bridge west of Wise River. Each boy fired two shots with a .22 rifle. The animals are described as smaller than leopards and larger than true wild cats.
The Montana Standard-Butte Daily Post earns a Pulitzer nomination for The Ten Magic Words series by Lewis T. Poole exposing evasion of justice in local courts. The prize, judged by Columbia trustees, honors journalistic achievement from 1961 among top Montana Lee Newspapers entries.
Snow and cold prevail east of Divide and across Flathead Valley with drifting winds. Highs range from 5 above to 15 below zero, with lows plunging to 20 below in some areas. Continued cold through Wednesday night and Thursday.
In Judge W D Murray s court three defendants pled guilty to separate charges within a half hour. Arthur S Freese of Bozeman a 46 year old ordained minister and carpenter pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for destroying mail while employed as a temporary carrier in September 1961. Frank Ernest Erickson Jr of Henderson Nevada 31 was sentenced to 18 months with 30 days in jail and three years probation for feloniously transporting a forged security from Kalispell to Pasadena on December 23 1961. Ralph H Adams of Spokane pleaded guilty to transporting a stolen vehicle across state lines from Spokane to Missoula on January 4.
SANTO DOMINGO UP I reports said three civilian members of the Dominican Republic council of state were replaced by military officers after a street clash left four demonstrators dead and about 12 wounded by tank-borne air force troops. The shakeup came as President Balaguer faced opposition calls for resignation and kept the remaining civilian members under Gen. Pedro Echa. Unclear whether the three civilians were forced out or resigned.
Moscow barber Bob Cummings sent a bill to Gov. Robert Smythe for advertising on auto license plates. He had paid 7.50 for a 1953 car tag and argued the state should pay for using his plates for publicity.
Butte resident James Wonnacott accuses state deputy game wardens Stuart Markle Anaconda Louis Kis Butte and Howard Larsen Butte of third degree assault after an arrest at Georgetown Lake in December They appeared with counsel James A Robischon before Justice J J Winston posting 350 bonds each for a January 30 trial Wonnacott claims he was struck beaten with a sap and his wife and infant daughter were jostled during the arrest authorities say the wardens defend the use of force as legal and non undue.
Helena Montana Director W J Everin of the Fish and Game Department said no complaint was made about alleged assault by three state game wardens in Butte The wardens report was routine noting the arrestee was belligerent but bonded and released Everin said wardens acted prudently and with excellent records of conduct.
President Kennedy sent Congress a major Army reorganization that abolishes the quartermaster general and similar posts. Most operations except training would be under two new commands led by full generals, with technical services becoming branches under them. The plan shifts the general staff toward planning and policy, with a transition expected to take 18 months.
Rocker bar owner Steve Elakovich filed a district court mandamus action against the state highway commission and Silver Bow County to force repair and restoration of Rocker road. He seeks 12500 damages for business losses plus 2500 in attorney fees, with a writ requiring appearance February 5. The case names county commissioners and highway officials and cites abandonment of the old main highway affecting Elakovich’s Bluebird Bar business.
Attorneys for Roman Catholic and Protestant churches appealed to the State Supreme Court to overturn a district court ruling that rejected probate of a new will by John Rudd of Absarokee dated January 9 1960 three days before his death. The case concerns the disputed estate and the churches wish to inherit.
Estimated project costs reach 992000 for storage at 4000 acre feet to support 3150 acres along Medicine Lodge Creek with a dam 85 feet high. Beneficial production would cover hay and irrigated pasture, with a cost per acre foot about 3.75 and a return of 1.23 to 1. The Beaverhead County Soil and Water Conservation District sponsors the effort, with Art Hansen as chair and local ranchers including John Briggs Henry Hildreth Dale Metlen Duke Davis Bella Welborn and Floyd Skelton Jr. involved.
The Montana Regents approved funding for a feasibility study on a medical school to serve Montana Wyoming Idaho and Nevada. WICHE will seek funds to explore best ways to meet these states needs now and in the near future. The four states lack medical schools and cannot fund one individually. The study aims to complete before site decisions are discussed.
Edgar James Dare 53 of Walkerville died from a bullet wound in St James Hospital after a self inflicted gunshot. Coroner says no inquest. deputies rushed him from 118 E Daly to the hospital. An automatic pistol was found beside him in the living room. Dare born in Devon England June 19. lifelong Walkerville resident, miner, member of the Miners Union.
President Kennedy plans to ask Congress for a ten billion dollar increase in the national debt limit to a record 308 billion through June 30, 1963. Virginia Democrat Chairman Harry Byrd said two billion should be approved by March 1 to cover current bills. The Jan. 11 debt stood at 295.8 billion, near the existing ceiling. Byrd announced these figures as Kennedy prepared to send a 1963 budget proposal to Congress showing 92.5 billion in spending and a possible 400 million surplus. Byrd and Senate Republican Leader Everett Dirksen indicated support for the immediate two billion ceiling increase.
At the UN Poland charges Portugal is using NATO arms to quell native agitation in Angola. The assembly sees Senegal Congo Brazzaville and Liberia join in criticizing Portugal as their delegation boycotts ongoing debate.
Democratic leaders and President Kennedy agree to push the college aid measure ahead of general school operations. The Senate will act first on higher education, with the House voting on urban affairs department and postal rate bills. Humphrey says Medicare will pass this session with presidential support.
