A severe cold wave froze much of the nation as blizzards hit northern areas and floods surged in the Midwest. At least 75 deaths were reported across the United States and Canada since Friday. Train passengers stranded in Oregon’s Cascade Mountains received meals, and a new Northwest cold snap threatened Washington and Oregon. In the Midwest, the Wabash and Ohio rivers rose, flooding Kentucky and Illinois towns, while Ohio and Kentucky faced new flood threats. Levees protected Rumsey and Sturgis as the Cuyahoga and other rivers overflowed near Cleveland and Vincennes.

John A. O Neill Engineer Dies at 56 in Butte
John A. O Neill 56 research engineer for Anaconda Copper Mining in charge of the Butte office died in a local hospital after being stricken Saturday morning in his office. Born in Butte September 12, 1893 he spent nearly his life in the mining city. He began as a mill man with Butte and Superior Mining then joined Anaconda in 1918. He rose through roles to assistant engineer and later to safety and research, becoming assistant research engineer in 1938 and head of the local research department.
