Washington report notes supporters of a bill to authorize the construction of 16 new warships press their case, seeking approval similar to Kellogg pact renouncing war. A strong bloc of senators plans to oppose or cut the cruiser program, aiming to reduce ships or defeat the measure.

Sunbury on Thames Eng Jan 16 AP General Bramwell Booth head of the Salvation Army was declared unfit to continue as commander in chief by the high council. Vote 55 to 8 with one commissioner absent due to illness. The council sat 14 hours with heated debate amid strict security at Sunbury Court.
Officers swept out punch boards, slot machines, and dice cups in Butte stores and cafes as police report the city cleaned of public gambling devices amid blue laws. Nearby reports say guards man tear gas bombs and sawed off shotguns at Buffalo police headquarters as Clyde Roberts and Fred Nave face pursuit on shots and warrants.
Shelby dispatch reports Marvin Johnson age 22 and James Fox age 54 died in a gasoline storage tank at the Toole county refinery one mile north of Oilmont. Johnson entered the tank to rivet a leak and was overcome by fumes. Fox, hearing the thud, entered to help and collapsed after wrapping of an insulating wire failed. Both were found dead after rescue attempts. Sheriff Clark and County Attorney Knack transported the bodies to Shelby.
More than 300 Butte youngsters attended the Butte Pioneers' annual children's Christmas party at Moose hall after the club meeting. About 150 were newsboys among the crowd. The hall overflowed with a lively program by the children and older entertainers, drawing loud applause from the pioneers.
Helena January reports the Montana legislature plans an amendment to tighten the act on the Peota bean known as Indian hemp. The piece explains the plant grows wild, is cultivated near Yellowstone county, and distills into a drug like cocaine. The assembly aims to curb culture and traffic amid rising crime.
In Snowden Lima sheepherder was found guilty of manslaughter in the murder of Samuel Bates. The jury recommended a sentence of five to ten years. Sentencing by Judge Rodgers set for Friday morning. Bates died days after a quarrel over their dogs and a stove poker wound.
Federal narcotics chief T R Cassidy and County Attorney Freebourn announced a joint campaign to curb drug traffic in Butte. They said dope selling at 75 cents a bundle will be stopped within a year, with evidence gathered by federal and county officers and peddlers prosecuted under stricter state laws. The plan requires further coordination and timing was not given.
In Helena on January 16 senators Cowan Kane and Stewart protested a Clark's Butte paper story alleging a senate fight. There was no fight, officials explained, as Cowan introduced a revenue investigation resolution and Kane moved to refer it to a standing committee.
The city council approved borrowing $500 from the street and alley fund to finance a skating carnival at Clark park rink set for Saturday and Sunday. Alderman Ray Coughlin, committee chair, sponsored the transfer and outlined rink expenditures.
Four persons died when their automobile was struck at a crossing by an eastbound Long Island train near Brentwood New York on January 16. Details of the collision and identities were not immediately available. Police and railroad officials investigated the incident at the scene.
Helena January 16 A special committee will examine the needs and achievements of the Eastern Montana Normal school at Billings. The day includes a senate endorsement of Former Governor Joseph M Dixon for interior secretary, a gasoline tax refunds inquiry, and several bill introductions. Speaker Bricker was invited by a friendly resolution.
The Montana highway commission reports steady road improvement as funds allow. From 1917 to 1928 total improved mileage rose to 1,847 with 544 miles built in the last two years under federal aid. Construction cost 5,771,361 dollars, 44 percent state funded, rest federal. An additional 138 miles were improved at 659,857 dollars, totaling 682 miles built during the period.
