The article reports a major Allied winter offensive against Germany. Soviet forces reportedly muster over 1.5 million troops across a 600 mile front from Budapest to the Baltic, while Western Allied troops advance in Belgium and strike German fuel networks and communications.
U S Pacific Fleet reports Third fleet bombed Hong Kong Swatow and Amoy amid a sweeping Indo China operation. Nimitz noted heavy Asian shipping losses at Indo China ports and major air attacks on Saigon Cam Ranh Bay with substantial oil refinery damage and several ships sunk or damaged.
Stimson reports American casualties on the Western front from D day through Jan 7 totaling 310,718. In the Ardennes break through three weeks brought about 52,594 American losses and about 40,000 German casualties including 50,000 killed or wounded. Further totals are expected Thursday.
U S First Army drives into the Belgian heart of the Nazi salient around Houffalize and closes on St Vith from three directions. The 75th Division crosses the Salm river and nears St Vith while Third Army dents Luxembourg defenses. German retreat aided by fog and rain as Rundstedt reinforces forces.
Pvt. Matt Casick 19 formerly of Butte high school football and track, has been missing in Belgium since Dec 17. He joined the Army Jan 24 1944 while a senior and earned all state honors as a football tackle in 1942 before moving to backfield in 1943. His last home letter arrived before Christmas.
Montana lawmakers begin week three with eight House notices including a theater license bill by Rep. Horrigan to replace taxes with annual fees. The bill would tax 44 theaters presently exempt, setting fees from five to one thousand dollars. Other actions include election law tweaks, a uniform trust receipt act, and a Warm Springs hospital inspection motion. A standard time bill and a raise for legislative attaches also advance.
Soviet forces under Marshal Ivan S. Konev pushed toward southeastern Germany in a major advance. In 24 hours the First Ukrainian army seized over 400 towns and villages in central Poland and neared Krakow and Jedrzejow, while Dzialoszyce fell and Budapest reported dozens of blocks seized with thousands captured. The Kremlin and Berlin estimated 3.5 million troops in heavy combat.
James F. Byrnes announced a five category priority system to draw about 200000 men under 30 for the armed services in 1945. Maj. Gen. Hershey was asked to instruct local boards to follow the plan to protect essential activities while meeting induction goals.
Japanese parliament members press for political overhaul as war worsens. The cabinet met after Prime Minister Koiso met Emperor Hirohito to report on the Philippines campaign amid reports of possible relocation of government from Tokyo to Korea.
A crowd of about 2500 gathered at the Union Pacific depot to witness the departure of Butte's first 1945 selectees for Fort Douglas. Families lined the streets and filled platforms as registrants from all three Silver Bow county boards leave for army service.

Luther Coffman, 28, an ex-soldier, was sentenced to life in San Quentin for the killing of Pvt. James B. Stanley in a San Francisco hotel last June. Coffman, who fled to The Dalles Oregon, was extradited back for trial.

The Montanan longtime Indian and public lands advocate chaired the Indian affairs committee and served on several panels. The Senate adopted a resolution of regret and sent delegates to the funeral. The Democratic caucus also moved Rep Mansfield to vacant committees aligning with Montana interests.
