Flyer Killed As Plane Overshoots Carrier Deck
In San Diego on January 14 Lieut. J. G. Water of the Battle Fleet air squadron died when his plane overshot the U S S carrier deck and sank in deep water. Aviation Pilot Marvel, flying with Water, escaped from the craft after it hit the water but Water was taken prisoner.

Butte Skating Carnival Draws 319 Students
Three hundred nineteen boys and girls from 27 public and parochial schools in Butte will compete in the municipal ice carnival at Clark park this weekend. Utah Copper to lay off 220 miners at Bingham plant
Utah Copper Mining announces layoff of its entire night shift of about 200 workers at Bingham operations, cutting production by 25 to 30 percent due to copper overproduction. Five Indians Burned to Death on Crow Reserve
Five Crow Indians from St. Xavier on the Crow reservation perished in a morning fire that destroyed the Tom Gardner cabin. The victims are Tom Gardner, his wife Agatha Mountain, his mother Plenty Trail, and their children Josephine, 11, and Lester, 6. The blaze started unknowingly around 4 o clock.

Petition for paving North Wyoming and East Woolman streets

Reinforced by temperatures from 15 to over 30 degrees below zero the Continental Divide stopped the majority of 22 Army Arctic patrol planes attempting a Selfridge Michigan to Spokane mission. Only one of seven crossing the Rockies near Kalispell succeeded, Lt. P. F. E. Shannahan in plane 22 reaching Kalispell after 270 miles from Havre.

Cold grips Montana as temperatures plummet nationwide
Butte and surrounding area sit as the coldest region in the United States with readings showing 46 degrees below at Basin and 30 below on the south side. Fires were sparked by the cold, three slight damages reported at the Butte fire station while 13 U S army planes were grounded in Great Falls. a Continental flight from Salt Lake arrived late but the main plane of National Parks Airways reached Butte on time.
