The Senate voted 85 to 1 to uphold the Kellogg multilateral treaty renouncing war. Applause from women in the galleries followed the roll call as senators Johnson and Glass faced criticism for opposing the pact. The report notes continued coverage on page 20.
Helena Jan 15. Further surveys by legislators will be started to determine state needs before any appropriation. Senator Cowan of Hill urged a five member committee to study state problems, assess if activities or departments can be reduced, and seek economies or increased revenues. Continued on Page 20 Col 8.
The Arizona-Colorado River commission authorized a suit in the U S Supreme Court to block the Boulder Canyon project and dam. Eminent counsel will be employed and the filing expected within 24 hours. This measure marks a climax in Arizona opposition under the Swing Johnson bill, passed by Congress and signed by President Coolidge.
Tentative plans were completed for the state convention of Parent Teachers associations to be held in Butte on May 16 17 and 18 at a meeting of the Butte central council of Parent-Teachers at the Y M C A. More than 500 delegates from all parts of the state are expected to attend the big state meeting. Sessions will be held in the Butte high school auditorium and several national officers will attend. Mrs Rufus Johnson is president of the central association and all state officers will be in attendance.
In Terre Haute Indiana a gas explosion in a basement rescue home wrecked a three story building and buried eight people. F D Sherman bond salesman was killed by bricks. Habeeb Nasher Syrian grocer died from shock. Alex Lloyd laborer aged 55 died in collapsed walls. Five others injured burned or shocked hospitalized with expected recovery.
Helena reports a near quarter million dollar depletion in gas tax funds from refunds on industrial purchases. The Montana highway commission seeks relief from the attorney general or legislature as refunds surge well beyond expectations, threatening road work for three months.
Helena January 15. A bill to curb fraud in en bloc store sales would require owners to list creditors and notify them under oath before a sale. Buyers must register notices with a notary and county clerk, with penalties of one to five years and up to $1000 fine. Continued on Page 2.
Vatican circles discussed notifying all powers with Holy See reps about a church state accord with Italy. If signed by Cardinal Gasparri and Mussolini, a concordat would be sent to governments, declaring a sovereign Holy See territory under the pope with gradual centralization of offices.
William Weis, 54, well known Butte resident and Spanish-American War veteran, died at his home at 1007 South Arizona Street eight days after his wife Elizabeth Weis. A Michig an native, he had lived in Montana 21 years. Survived by daughter Mrs Harold Edwards and sons Joe and William Weis, he was active in Henry Lawton camp U S W V.
Butte lodge of the Loyal Order of Moose outlines a new home and 1000 new members within the present year. Al J. Sartori district supervisor for Idaho Washington and Montana and supreme council member visits Butte en route to the supreme council meeting in Washington DC later this month.
Washington Jan. 15 President-Elect Hoover said he could not undertake his planned good will tour of Cuba and the West Indies before March 4. Hugo Hartenstein and Luis Machado of the American Chamber of Commerce in Cuba reported Hoover's reply that he would not have time for such a trip before inauguration.
Mr. Sartori told Moose and Mooseheart members at the East Quartz Moose hall that the Butte lodge has 500 members with most present and expects 1500 by year end. He cited Lou Gehrig and C. H. Olson as leaders, signaling a new home project for the local organization as the lodge expands within Montana’s 35 lodges.
Officials of the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Pacific railway reported steady prosperity in Montana during a visit to Butte. J H Howard of Chicago assistant to the vice president in charge of traffic F N Hicks of Seattle assistant traffic manager and J F Bohl of Seattle assistant general passenger agent were part of the party. Howard departed for Chicago last night while Hicks and Bohl planned to attend the livestockers event in Billings Thursday and Friday.
Constable Eddie McCarthy and Billie McCrone raided six stores late Monday night, confiscating three auto loads of punch boards and prize merchandise. H. B. Brinck was arrested, charged with operating punch boards and slot machines on six counts, and released on his own recognizance for a Saturday preliminary hearing. Parents’ complaints spurred the raids, which officials say are not connected to a broader county gambling crackdown.
In Marshfield Oregon on January 15 a local tobacco dealer’s dog named Buster has spent a year retrieving a foil wrapped cigar from a nearby butcher in exchange for meat. Today hunger drove him to fetch a cigar stub he offered the butcher and earned meat as payoff.
About 800 Montanans will arrive in Los Angeles Monday on the Union Pacific excursion. The Southern California Montanans organization designates the Hotel Alexander as headquarters and has planned receptions and dances. The train in four sections leaves Butte Saturday night and will be met at Union Station by the mayor and Montanan delegates. Named greetors include Judge and Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. Weirick, Mrs. Rickman, Mrs. Semper, James Orton, J. W. Gillette, W. H. Applegate, C. L. Lyons, Dan Heyfron, F. L. Benepe, and Dr. Charles Fisher. A reception is set for 7:30 p.m. Monday on the mezzanine and in parlor B.
