Mansfield calls for halt to bombing to push peace talks

Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield urged an end to bombing North Vietnam to push Hanoi toward peace talks. He cited a New Year statement by North Vietnamese Foreign Minister Nguyen Duy Trinh suggesting willingness to negotiate once war ends. Mansfield warned against a travel tax and proposed spending cuts, while backing a 10 percent tax increase to stabilize the dollar.

Wreck northeast of Butte injures one and shatters two cars

Heart transplant patient Kasperak has gall bladder removed

Stanford surgeons removed Mike Kasperak's gall bladder in a one hour operation to relieve complications after a new heart transplant. The heart, from a 43 year old woman, beat normally and doctors noted liver issues but remained hopeful of recovery.

Do Van Tan 22, a Dalat draftee, used his body to shield four American advisers in a bunker during a North Vietnamese attack in Phu My district.
