In Panama City Maj. Angel Arauz, Panamanian presidential guard chief, said he knew nothing of the arrests report ed by Vance. Arauz led the guard detachment that seized an expeditionary force from Cuba which invaded Panama early in 1959.
President Johnson directs a federal state task force to Anaconda Montana to mobilize immediate aid amid severe joblessness caused by new Butte ore reduction plants. He names Labor and HEW to coordinate training guidance and job placement with state and local officials.
The winter storm moved off New England with 137 dead and widespread disruptions. Clearing skies followed bitter cold from South to Atlantic. Florida citrus heaters prepped for record lows. travel lagged. schools closed. many deaths from exposure and overexertion while shoveling or freeing vehicles.
At the Metals Bank and Trust Co annual meeting officers were reelected and a new director named Jerry J. Harrington, vice president and treasurer of Montana Power Co, replacing Sam B. Chase. Owen Bush was promoted to assistant vice president and assistant manager in Timepay, and three new assistant cashiers were named.
At the annual stockholders meeting William P. Kroger Jr. was elected to replace Ruth Davis Kroger as a director. Kroger, linked with Bateman Eichler and Co. of Los Angeles, joins five reelected directors Irving H. Bolitho Helen S. Davis Howard A. Johnson and Elmer H. Mester. Officers for the year to be elected at a forthcoming directors’ meeting.
A B52 crash near Big Savage Mountain left two survivors recovered from subzero cold with one body found in the wreckage and two more missing. Maj. Thomas W. McCormick and Capt. Parker C. Peedin reached safety as Civil Air Patrol and SAC teams mapped a three by ten mile disaster area around Cumberland.
Residents testified at a hearing over the Rocky Mountain Phosphate plant in Garrison complaining smoke dust and fumes disrupt sleep affect health and interrupt classes at Garrison school. Judge Frank Haswell will hear the case for a possible temporary injunction with a second hearing set for February 17 for a possible permanent injunction.
Shawnee Oklahoma five minutes after warning from former student Robert Lawson 42 he intended to crash into the campus Okla Baptist University. The plane struck the third floor bursting into flames killing Lawson but injuring no one on campus. Lawson’s son attends the university and authorities note a recent release from Central State Hospital Norman.
Anaconda leaders welcomed President Johnson's plan to dispatch a task force to ease unemployment but pursued their own strategy to attract industry. The copper town, population about 12 000, faces job losses as the Anaconda Co transfers the concentrator to Butte and automates the smelter. Local business figures like Paul A. Hawkins and Dr. Claibourne Shennard advocate hiring an industrial expert at 25 000 to 30 000 dollars annually to lure new industry.
A stormy Atlantic left five aboard the schooner Enchantress unaccounted for after it sank 160 miles east of Jacksonville. Coast Guard and ships searched the area for Mr and Mrs John Pelton their two Calif born children and Captain Christopher de Grabowski of Miami. The last radio from the Enchantress indicated rapid sinking and two dinghies as the sea took five on board.
Butte Montana council members scheduled a vote tonight to pick a new mayor after Vern Griffith resigned January 6 to take a Montana post with the Area Redevelopment Administration. An earlier ballot produced an eight eight deadlock between Leonard Vainio and Tom Powers with Vainio serving as acting mayor.
Mrs John F Kennedy delivered a televised statement expressing gratitude for about 800000 messages of comfort after her husband’s assassination. She said the letters sustain her and she hopes to acknowledge all of them, though it will take time. Tears marked her emotional address.
Dr. Clairborne Shennard, chairman of the Anaconda Community Development Committee, welcomed President Johnsons directive creating a federal task force for Anaconda. He and other committee members expressed unified hope that federal and state aid would help solve the citys economic difficulties.
