Argentina's wartime government faces a total three day business shutdown as leaders refuse to operate in protest of wage hikes and year end bonuses. Government vows to seize stores if sellers refuse, aiming to protect humble citizens amid Peron influence concerns.
On Jan 14 in Nuremberg AP reports a German naval lieutenant testified that Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz ordered a total sea war against crews and ships in 1942 to break the U S Merchant Marine. Heisig said Doenitz urged destroying rescue boats and hinted at aggressive Nazi indoctrination of the navy. A 1943 secret Doenitz order urged attacks on convoy rescue ships to destroy crews.
Winston Churchill, former British prime minister, landed in the United States aboard the Queen Elizabeth with Mrs Churchill. He wore Royal Yacht Squadron uniform, planned a March 5 Fulton visit to speak at Westminster College, and endorsed a joint US Britain inquiry on the Palestine question while affirming Zionist beliefs and continued Conservative leadership.
HANOI based report from January 14 says French and Annamite sources fear 600000 to 2000000 people in northern Indo China will die of starvation this year as cold and hunger worsen. An 18 month old girl, Linda May Kimble, was found drowned in the wash cycle of a mechanical washing machine in Atlanta after her mother reported the child missing. Police arrived as the mother located the body.
Harry A. Kinney, 77, last but one of the 1895 Butte fire survivors, died in Chicago after six years living with his daughter. Born July 25, 1868 in California, Kinney helped extinguish flames at the Royal Milling warehouse during the Kenyon Connell building explosions that wiped out 57 lives. The lone survivor is said to be John Flannery of Great Falls.
The CIO United Auto Workers say they will settle their 30 cent wage demand for Ford at the 17 1/2 percent increase urged by a government fact finding board, with Ford negotiations resuming Tuesday. Ford has offered 12 percent. Meanwhile 200,000 Electrical Workers plan a Tuesday walkout balancing national strike totals at 605,000 idle. They seek a 19 1/2 cent hour increase for GM auto wage parity, and 15 cent hours for GE and Westinghouse. A 328,000 packing house strike is set for Wednesday, and a 800,000 steel workers strike was postponed a week. Telephone service continues.
London January 14 Secretary of State James F Byrnes urged the United Nations assembly to create a prompt atomic energy commission and empower the Security Council to maintain peace in an atomic age The proposal links safeguards to universal security and human welfare urging swift passage of the Moscow backed resolution with Senator Tom Connally to carry it in committee.
Beaverhead National forest officials and state game department representatives met to map an air based census of elk in the Jerry Creek Fleecer districts to decide if herd reductions are needed. If funds allow an airplane pilot will locate herds, followed by a mid winter field census with rangers and local stockmen asked to cooperate.

Helena dispatch reports Montana American Legion executive committee chose Missoula as the site for the 1946 department convention set for July 21 to 23. The committee urged easing apprenticeship rules to aid World War II veterans, equal civil service rights for veterans of both wars, universal military training for American youth, and continued selective service until peace is won. Committeemen noted Montana’s National Guard will be tripled this year from 102 officers and 1,477 enlisted when federalized in 1940.

An explosion aboard a large army barge loaded with liquid oxygen and pyrotechnic gear lit the Manila harbor area on Monday night. No deaths or vessel damage reported.
