News from San Antonio de los Cobres and Salta province report two volcanic eruptions near the Andes. High death toll feared as lava and mud flow destroy dwellings and cattle areas. Refugees say scores buried under lava, while Salta organizes a relief expedition.
Congress presented familiar topics on its agenda including drought relief confirmations and a campaign fund inquiry. The Senate approved the reappointment of the two remaining members of the tariff commission as part of broader action.
National Chairman John Barton Payne warned drought relief presents the greatest peace time emergency for the Red Cross, surpassing the 1927 Mississippi flood effort that fed and sheltered 325,000. He noted 405,000 drought aid recipients so far, with demand rising daily.

Mrs. Horace E. Dodge Jr is convalescing after a plastic nose reshaping operation at Park West hospital. Surgeon Dr Luis P Berne died of a heart attack during anesthesia and was replaced by Dr J Safian who completed the procedure.
A Cascade Idaho crash killed 28 year old pilot Ray Fischer yesterday afternoon while four passengers escaped. Investigators report Fischer shut off the motor as a downdraft struck the plane, a tree then crushed him. passengers Esther Coleman and Sid Coleman of Cascade survived, while Charles Coleman suffered a broken leg. Lew Kiski of Indian Creek also survived.
Denver, Jan 13. Governor W H Adams was inaugurated as Colorado's chief executive for the third time after arriving in a covered wagon in 1871. The ceremony marked a continuation of his long state leadership.
Unsettled conditions in Montana for Wednesday and Thursday. Snow flurries expected in the extreme west, while the eastern portions may warm up Wednesday.
The Butte School District trustees consider investing about $50,000 in six percent security. If found, the school fund grows by the interest, else county funds gain the same amount. School District No. 1 has $50,000 in sinking funds and $299,683.23 in bonded debt.
Mrs. L. R. Margetts was chosen queen of Tirzah temple No. 3 Daughters of the Nile at the annual meeting in the Masonic temple. Catherine Rintz Supreme queen of the Daughters of the Nile attended from Chicago and will stay for today’s mid winter ceremonial initiation of a large class.
Directors of the Helena branch of the Federal Reserve Bank voiced confidence in Montana banks at their annual meeting in Helena. They reported a sound condition and a rise in branch operations last year, noting fewer loans to members in 1930. Henry Sieben was elected chairman. fellow directors reelected include Russell Strain, T. A. Marlow, S. McKennan, and R. A. Towle.

In Los Angeles on January 13 Clara Bow testified as a prosecution witness as Daisy Devoe, her discharged secretary, faced 37 counts of grand theft related to alleged misappropriation of the actress bank funds. Bow described letters and telegrams and denied authorizing purchases including a birthday gift dresser set.
The Silver Bow area council of the Boy Scouts held its annual banquet at the Finlen hotel with 116 prominent citizens present. Dr Francis R Thomson Montana School of Mines president urged Scouting as a future democracy, and Walter L Hayward deputy regional Scout executive spoke along with council leaders.
J D Wallace of Butte was re elected president of the Montana School Boards association at its annual convention in Missoula. Fred Parker of Hamilton was named first vice president J C Haglan of Cut Bank second vice president and E L Marvin of Billings secretary treasurer. Next year’s convention will be in Lewistown. Frank Livingston urged creation of a state agency for teacher placement estimating Montana teachers pay private agencies 25000 to 30000 yearly.
A noon civic luncheon in Butte features Guy E. Emery, secretary manager of the Montana Association, as chief speaker. Emery will discuss aims and prospects of the association and its impact on Montana's development, with emphasis on business and professional implications for the district.
Boston January 13. A measure backed by Rep. Thomas Kennedy Roxbury would permit the village church sewing circle to raffle a patchwork quilt legally if the bill passes.
Washington January 13. Senator Shortridge Republican of California urged enactment of a tariff on oil during the current session. The proposal comes as oil policy debate intensifies in the Senate this week.
The Montana lower house passed a 6 million highway debenture bill to fund 1.5 million warrants yearly for four years, using five percent interest and gasoline tax revenue for repayment. Senate action pending with committee lists adopted and bills received. Tax commission changes were also proposed by Gilboe Nevard Leavitt and Nelstead.
Reported from Jan 13 indicates San Miguel Island and Fayal station heard nothing about the Tradewind after it departed Bermuda toward the Azores. A New York dispatch claimed the plane, carrying Lieut. William S. MacLaren and Mrs. Beryl Hart, may have gone down about 20 miles off Mosteiros Point.
