The conflict surges in Beirut and northern Lebanon with 71 killed and 122 wounded from dawn to dusk. The U S Embassy comes under cross fire as Christian Phalangists and Palestinian guerrillas blockade key routes around the capital.
Veronica Atzei, a shepherd's daughter, wandered from home in Gello and survived two days in cold mountains east of Florence by eating grass and acorns and sheltering under bushes. She was found crying for her mother two miles from home. She survived with mild frostbite on limbs and chapped lips.
Montana Republican chair Florence Haegen announced the party will not pursue a November tax relief initiative and urged Gov. Thomas L. Judge to withdraw his own proposal. She cited constitutional concerns and said balancing state finances belongs to the legislature, not the ballot. Judge offered no immediate comment as his petition drive proceeds.
At the United Nations Security Council opening, the PLO denounced Israel as Zionist and racist. Farouk Kaddoumi urged an effective resolution offering Palestinians a path home, while the council voted 11-1 to admit PLO participation with rights of a member state. A county judge fined the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers 25 000 and ordered attachment of the union's assets. He also set a 100 daily fine for each striking teacher for the seven week walkout. Union says they will appeal. Only 345 of 3 500 teachers reported to work as 62 000 students faced class cancellations.
The Montana Standard reports a city crackdown after an investigation found that city employees routinely avoided metered parking fines by claiming city business. Mayor Mike Micone ordered a stop to ticket fixing, restricting ticket dismissals to the chief of police, the city judge, or in emergencies, with only broken meters or emergencies excused.
Ned Nilsson 16 a National Honor Society member and junior varsity center died after being stabbed during a rehearsal for a student film in Godfrey Illinois. Friends were shooting an extra credit scene when a wooden board broke and a knife struck his chest. No charges filed.
Montana cattle producers gathered in Helena urged to use the Helena Cowport to ship live cattle overseas. Gibson Goodman of Montana Air Route International argued overseas demand for beef breeding stock could boost prices, with Japan highlighted as a key market.
Three pipe bombs were found in a subway tunnel beneath the United Nations Library building. A security officer said the amount of explosive could have demolished part of the library. An anonymous caller later claimed responsibility for the planting.
