Fifteen persons perished in a midweek crash on snow covered northern Kentucky hillsides. A TWA Martin Skyliner collided with a privately owned DC3 near Burlington, a grim air tragedy unfolding in cold weather and low visibility. Authorities investigated the collision and its aftermath.
Italy and France reached a principle agreement to study an arms pool proposal, aiming at international control within WEU to curb West German arming and spur broader European cooperation. Experts will meet in Paris Jan 17 to refine the plan as a step toward united Europe.
Montana Power Co. official J. E. Corette testified before the Federal Power Commission that imports from Alberta, Canada are essential to meet customer demand. The plan seeks up to 20 billion cubic feet yearly and 100 million cubic feet daily, with a hearing expected to continue.
Lawmen swept southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana in a pursuit of Julius Bohannon, an escaped killer tied to 1930s slayings of two Oklahoma officers and a prison guard. A kidnapping victim identified Bohannon and police suspect his son aided the escape.
The Army issued a draft call for 11,000 men in March, the same as February, after Pentagon reductions cut February and March quotas from about 20,000. Secretary Wilson said the 11,000 level would persist through June, with the Army facing the largest loss of personnel in the cutback.
WASHINGTON The case of Noel and Herta Field moves forward as they ask Communist Hungary for asylum. The State Department confirmed a letter allegedly from Noel Field requesting asylum and noted the minister in Budapest received it while press officials said the wording was cautious. Field is accused in the United States as a Communist agent and linked to espionage in Europe.
Washington reports Ike will decide personally whether to run again in 1956 and sided with Republicans defending Vice President Nixon from Democratic attacks. He dismissed out of context quotes from Nixon as bosh and said duty would guide his decision in critical moments. A late convention and shortened campaign were under discussion while Democrats set August 27 for their nominating meeting.
Helena report notes a Montana House bill proposed by Rep. Ronald W. Holtz would allow up to two hours off work for voters to cast ballots in general elections. The measure is among five bills introduced early in the 34th Legislature.
George Hormel II, heir to the meat-packing fortune, was acquitted in a marijuana possession case in Los Angeles after jurors believed he was framed. He testified he never smoked or bought marijuana, saying he confessed under police pressure to avoid publicity amid his mother’s illness.
A 10 second tremor rocked Orleansville Algeria on Wednesday night prompting residents to flee into streets. Despite memories of last September’s quake that killed about 1500 in the area early reports said no injuries.
President Eisenhower said officials can reach conflicting decisions in the Ladejinsky matter and he has formed no judgment himself. He supported Harold E. Stassen’s right to hire Ladejinsky after Benson blocked him, saying Stassen will be held responsible if wrong. Ladejinsky, a 55 year old naturalized American, was cleared for security and served as U S agricultural attache in Tokyo.
Montana forecast notes considerable cloudiness with warmer west portions and light snow in mountains. East and north central areas see less cold, highs 25 35 mixed with partly cloudy skies and wind. west sees moderate snow morning and continued snow into Friday with little temperature change.
Dag Hammarskjold arrived in Honolulu on his homeward trip from Peiping amid signals that his mission to free prisoners in Communist China is not in vain. London says Hammarskjold has not failed. Washington says the State Department is uninformed on the talks’ substance. He declined comment, saying no time or place for remarks.
Charles U. Bedell of Butte was elected potentate of Bagdad Temple Shrine at its annual meeting in the Masonic Temple. Officiating installing officer Charles M DesChene, with past potentate Sam T Blair assisting. Read of officers, temple reports, and a buffet luncheon followed amid broad attendance from Butte and nearby cities.
US officials said aircraft would be made available to carry out Pacific observation flights over Costa Rica at the request of the OAS. Costa Rica reports nine towns strafed, one killed, several wounded, amid claims Nicaragua’s Somoza invaded. President Figueres denounces the attack as Somoza challenges him to a duel as fighting continues.
At a Managua news conference President Anastasio Somoza challenged Costa Rican President Jose Figueres to a border duel. Somoza, a longtime rival, said there is no need for bloodshed and demanded Figueres prove he is man enough to take him on at the frontier.
John J. Downey, a Butte pharmacist, was elected chairman of the Butte Civic Center Commission at a reorganization meeting in the Center. W. P. Donnelly was reelected vice chairman and Charles McAuliffe became secretary. Duggan and McAuliffe were named commission members for three year terms. State elective officers named the new members. Formosa reports say four engine bombers carried out a three wave attack on Toumen and Tienao north of the Tachens, while Communist MIG fighters and SA11 bombers staged counter moves. Ground fire resisted but no confirmed losses. all Nationalist bombers returned to Formosa.
The American National Cattlemen's Association ends its three day convention in Reno urging continuation of tariff barriers on imports and closer monitoring of Mexican cattle entering the United States. Jay Taylor of Amarillo is re elected president with New Orleans chosen for the 1956 gathering. They call for talks with Mexico to curb flows if imports rise too high and approve a beef council to boost consumption. They urge Congress to expand Social Security Act coverage to self employed ranchers and seek action on smuggling of 62 Charolais cattle.
