Madison River Ice Jam Clears After Warmer Weather
A Madison River ice jam south of Three Forks dissolved as warmer temperatures melted the ice. Deputy Sheriff Max Makoff said water created a channel through the ice and the jam was breaking up. A UPI reporter observed clear water stretches with ice in others and noted highway planes surveying potential road threats. The Anaconda Forest Products mill in Bonner idled 152 workers but resumed Thursday night as water again moved in the river.

A 19 year old bank employee in Livingston pled guilty to embezzling $20 from First National Bank on Nov 22 1961. Judge W D Murray placed Dean Edward Sos on six months suspended sentence and two years probation. Sos had no prior convictions and his attorney cited financial strain and family illness as mitigating factors. The government noted more money was taken in small amounts since September but chose the lesser charge due to age and circumstances.

Truck Driver Killed Near Big Timber
A 21 year old Big Timber truck driver, George Bjorndal, died when his loaded gasoline rig crashed into a semi trailer 1.1 miles east of Grey Cliff. Wind gusts and icy U.S. 10 conditions likely caused the collision. the other driver Vernon Mandle of Riesland Trucking Co. was uninjured. An inquest was set for 9 a.m. Friday. Bjorndal survived by his wife Mary and his father Ane Bjorndal. The incident lifts the annual Montana traffic toll to three.
