Copper prices surge to 12 1 2 cents a pound triggering a 25 cent daily wage raise for workers in Butte Anaconda and Great Falls under the company union contracts. A further 25 cent raise is tied to copper at 13 cents for 30 days.
Sen Charles P Cotter offers a resolution accusing WPA agents in Montana of forging work orders padding payrolls and diverting federal funds in Broadwater county. San Francisco January 11 The National Labor Relations Act was ruled unconstitutional by the US circuit court of appeals in a case stemming from Mackay Radio and Telegraph Company discharge of five employees. Judges Wilbur and Mathews joined in the decision with Garrecht dissenting as the board’s request to enforce re employment was denied.
Senator Burton K. Wheeler and other Montanans urged Public Works Administration officials to remove technical restrictions blocking the Tongue River dam and Beaverhead Rock reservoir projects in Montana. Wheeler said the PWA could push the Tongue River project along despite a National Recovery recommendation.
In a brief session the Montana House renamed Carl Ahlgreen of Lake County as rear admiral of the mythical Scandinavian navy of Montana and appropriated 50 million for fleet operations. Admiral Ahlgreen spoke in uniform, describing a 50-year-old whale in Flathead lake used as a tunnel for travelers, and recounting a 1935 incident where horses pulled at the whale’s teeth triggered an earthquake near Helena.

Washington state patrolmen based in a private Everett home checked two mysterious cars linked to the Charles Mattson kidnapping. One car left at a Marysville garage by a middle aged man resembled the kidnapper, who ordered it readied for morning departure but did not return. A boy’s cap was found in the back seat. A second vehicle’s marks near a deserted shack three miles away were also under test.
Dr. W W Mattson father of kidnapped and slain Charles Mattson 10 says he has made every effort to pay the ransom of 28000 to regain his son through his representative Paul H Sceva. Sceva says no ransom paid though there were three contacts by mail and telephone with the kidnapper. No clues to the kidnapper were disclosed.
