Butte Fire Department to Observe Big Explosion Date
The Butte fire department marks January 15 as the thirty sixth anniversary of the Big Explosion near the St James hotel east of Arizona street. Fifty seven died, including 13 firefighters and 44 spectators. chiefs Angus B. Cameron and John F. Sloan among the dead. The blaze began near box 72 shortly before 10 o clock January 15, 1895, in a railroad and warehouse district.
