Anaconda Co requests an early bargaining session and a convenient time for talks. The last session occurred Oct. 19, 1967. Rask, ill at home since Friday, said he had not received the company letter and may visit his office today. Hannifan cited the National Labor Relations Act requiring good faith bargaining on wages hours and employment conditions.
American infantry and artillery reportedly destroyed a 350 man Viet Cong battalion 31 miles northwest of Saigon after a five hour battle. U S forces reported 103 enemy dead, five Americans killed, 28 wounded, and a separate ten hour clash in the Mekong Delta with 18 American deaths and 50 wounded.
Bozeman area rancher L. O. Ward of Gallatin Valley Angus died shortly after noon Wednesday from an accidental gunshot wound. Ward was shooting magpies from a basement window of his home. no one else was present. He operated a cattle ranch south of Bozeman Hot Springs. The coroner said the death appears accidental and the body was taken to Dokken-Nelson Funeral Home for pending arrangements.
A four engine U S Marine transport plane with 15 aboard was feared down in a Nevada snowstorm 21 miles southwest of Battle Mountain near Needle Peak. Radar contact was lost at 1 50 p m after the pilot spoke with Elko Flight Service. Search parties could not locate the aircraft in the storm.
One of the principal speakers will be William E. Dunn executive director of the Associated General Contractors of America. Dunn will speak Friday morning at a breakfast meeting. Mayor Thomas F. Powers will give the opening welcome at 10 o'clock.
Louis Block, the world's fifth heart transplant patient, died ten hours after receiving a woman's heart at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. Doctors cited pumping capacity and lung condition linked to Block's long heart disease, noting the operation lasted 8 hours 20 minutes and followed earlier transplants by Dr. Kantrowitz.
The $78 million Reichle Dam project gained a major milestone as the Interior Department approves the Bureau of Reclamation feasibility report. Hubert White of Townsend announced the move, noting the project would provide irrigation, flood control and recreation benefits, with long road to congressional authorization ahead.
Philip J. Ross 46, owner of the Atlantic Bar in Butte, was not charged "at this time" after a shooting involving Kenneth Patrick 29, who was wounded by a 38 caliber slug in the abdomen. Patrick, described as Ross's close friend, was hospitalized in fair condition. Ross was detained briefly, released to his attorney Frank Burgess after questioning by police.
Erwin Christensen of Dillon was elected illustrious potentate of the Bagdad Temple of the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine at Butte. The annual meeting installed numerous officers and trustees with representatives to the imperial council in Chicago next July. Christensen is a Dillon native and Western Montana College graduate.

Mayor Tom Powers urges a new city ordinance to criminalize glue sniffing as a misdemeanor. He cites rising juvenile cases and says the measure targets sniffing agents while not banning glue sales. The council plans final action next meeting amid discussion of parking decals and traffic signal funding.
A mailed warning to about 5,000 homes explains that parents may be prosecuted for allowing children under 18 to violate the relaxed curfew. Violations carry possible arrests and detention until parents arrange release, with potential fines up to 1000 dollars and bonds up to 3000 dollars.
The Interstate Commerce Commission announces February hearings in Miles City Billings Butte Helena and Missoula to review possible discontinuance of the Northern Pacific Railroad Mainstreeter passenger service. ICC supervisor Paul LaBaine listed the five dates and locations.
Ernest C. Steel, 70, filed as a candidate for the Montana Railroad and Public Service Commission, handing a $105 fee with wife Florence present. The post pays $10,000 now and $10,500 after the election. Steel is a former five term Great Falls city council member and three time school board member.
Fred E. Barrett 48 a former state Democratic chairman and five term state representative from Chester filed for lieutenant governor in Helena. He paid a 45 dollar fee after 4 p.m. Barrett, who led the Montana House and chaired the party, cited 10 years in the House and five years as chairman as qualifications and announced Darby O'Brien as secretary treasurer of the Montanans for Barrett Club.
Senate Majority Leader Eugene H. Mahoney age 53 filed Wednesday for the Democratic nomination for governor in Helena. The Thompson Falls attorney and former Montana House speaker paid a 232.50 filing fee with wife Trudy present. He pledged a sound progressive program and said he will discuss issues and outline his plan for Montana if nominated on June 4 and elected on November 5. Mahoney served two full terms and part of another as Sanders County legislator.
