Nearly 9,000 more soft coal miners walked out Tuesday keeping total idle above 59,000 as Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia mines shut. Four more steel companies were hit Bethlehem Steel Jones and Laughlin Sharon Steel and Wheeling Steel. Western Pennsylvania bore the worst impact with 52 mines closed many steel captive operations.

Starving Their Son to Death Charged in New York
A 29 year old man Guy Scierzo and his wife Mary are charged with homicide after their three year old son died of starvation while a daughter barely survived. Police say the couple admitted feeding only the two children who lived while the others were fed nothing and the mother claimed the children would not eat.
