A weary thermometer reached 22 degrees at 1:30 this afternoon in Butte after a low of 7 degrees earlier today. The barometer remained high and readings stayed steady all day, suggesting fair weather to come. Yesterday’s high reached 18 degrees.
In Helena on January 10 Montana representatives halted other business to pass H B 5 extending elk hunting season in Park county to March 1. The measure passed 96 to 0 and moves to the Senate for concurrence, with Gov. Frank H expected to act.
Vienna reports Italian troops massed along the Austrian frontier ready to act if Nazi putschists seize power after the Saar plebiscite. Austrian authorities fear post election unrest as hundreds of Nazis and sympathizers are arrested in Tyrol. Italy reinforces Brenner line with Verona district garrisons amid state of alarm.
Dr. John F. Condon testified that Hauptmann is the man who collected the $50,000 ransom in the Lindbergh case. The defense failed to prove a gang kidnapped the baby, and Condon denied telling anyone of such a gang or that the body had been moved. He disputed questions about the box and the so called chief, and recalled no pursuit on a Williamsburg street sighting.
Registration deadlines announced for city primary on March 18, general city election on April 1, and school election on April 6. County Clerk John Holland notes 14,350 voters eligible for the city primary and urges timely registration before the listed dates.

President Roosevelt sent to the Senate a large batch of nominations for more than 1500 federal posts filled during the Congressional recess. Joseph P. Kennedy of New York was named chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. The list also included members for the new Communications Commission and other federal posts. Anning 8 Pratt from New York was named to the Communications Commission to serve until next July, succeeding Hampson Gary of Texas.
A Senate survey shows 35 percent ready to sustain a presidential veto on the soldiers' bonus if current lines hold. Thirty-three votes defeat the bonus, 21 undecided, and 29 favor payment, with leaders predicting a House override but a Senate veto sustainment.
Police Chief Jere Murphy ordered a citywide stop to all gambling including dice twenty one draw and stud poker and wheel games. Slot machines are banned. He says state law will be enforced to the letter and raids of gaming venues will follow.
Washington January 10. The post office department announced appointments of acting postmasters including C. A. Smithey in Hamilton Montana.
Fe D Anderson arrested near the Columbia Gardens about ten days ago will be taken this afternoon to Great Falls for removal proceedings before Judge C N Pray. He is in custody of U S Deputy Marshal D A Batchoff and is indicted at Spokane on possession and manufacture of molds for counterfeit 50 cent pieces.
Dr. John F. Condon said he waited five months to publicly identify Bruno Richard Hauptmann after a New York lineup, insisting it was to be fair. He recalled recognizing Hauptmann from his accent and manner and said he believed he could make him talk with another chance, but authorities interrupted.
In Saarbrucken the plan to split the Saar Basin if voters return to Germany sparked tonight. Anti Nazi protests to the League of Nations urged consideration of alleged terrorism in interpreting the plebiscite outcome.
