Hijacked Eastern jet diverted to Cuba with 78 aboard
An Eastern Airlines flight carrying 72 passengers and six crew members was hijacked to Havana by a man claiming to be a Communist from Indiana. He pressed a seven inch knife into stewardess Joyce Jernigan and forced her to sit beside him during the 45 minute flight. After about four hours, the six crewmen and two passengers returned to Miami. the remaining 70 passengers awaited transfer by planes sent from Miami. The hijacker claimed he was running from the FBI and said they were going to Cuba, threatening to kill if his bluff was called.
