Five Soldiers Die as Fort Hood Tank Hits Truck
A 50 ton M48 tank sideswiped a five ton truck carrying soldiers from A Company 35th Armored 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood Texas. The collision sparked a gasoline fire killing five soldiers and wounding 22. Four died on scene and one died hours later at the base hospital. All victims and most injured were from Ohio or Texas. The driver of the tank from the 67th Armored unit escaped with a minor head injury. Weather was 25 degrees with a light drizzle as the incident occurred on North Avenue in the cantonment area. A board of officers will investigate.

Mercury Drops to 11Year Low Amid Fatal Cold in Butte
The mercury fell to an 11 year low in Butte and could drop further though not likely to breach the alltime records. Ernest Keskinen, 74, froze to death on Butte's East Side during the deep freeze. Fire destroyed the Bennetts home on 113 Missoula after an electrical fire and a milkhouse explosion injured Siverino Galetti, 41, who worked at Elk Park dairy. Three volunteer fire departments aided Centerville as a second cold spell set in later.

Victim Found Frozen Outside Home
Ernest Keskinen a 74 year old resident of a rooming house at 117 Covert was found dead on Covert Street between Granite and East Broadway. Coroner Andrew Aleksich placed death between 2 30 and 3 00 a m with 36 below temperature in Butte. Keskinen had asthma and was found within about 20 yards of his warm room.

Navy Lieutenant Marron Killed in Philippines Plane Crash
Navy Lt. jg Charles Francis Marron of Deer Lodge was among four Navy personnel killed when a Skyraider crashed near Mt. Santa Rita north of Manila during a flight from Cubi Point to Naha Okinawa. Marron, 26, a 1959 Naval Academy graduate, was a former smokejumper and Powell County native. He died with the Lexington carrier group in the Philippines.
