President Roosevelt sent Congress a play safe budget of 83.76 billion for fiscal 1946 with flexibility to adjust by 10 billion. He notes no new taxes but says relief from taxes or controls is unlikely while war lasts and demobilization could begin after July 1, 1946.
Thunderous new B 29 strikes hit Tokyo and Formosa as forces support MacArthur’s Luzon return. Saipan based 21st bomber command and China based squads targeted Japan with 60 bombers over Tokyo and Formosa reported. All planes returned safely to China bases with no enemy resistance noted.
American dough boys and tanks fought a blizzard to reach within three miles of the Germans main supply and escape highway in the Belgian salient. Von Rundstedt was moved armored units from Bastogne as U S forces threaten the Houffalize St Vith corridor. The next 12 to 24 hours could mark a turning point in the Battle of the Bulge.
A capacity Fox Theatre audience in Butte heard Catholic, Jewish and Protestant leaders present a seven point peace plan to form a just and lasting peace. Speakers urged moral grounds for peace and endorsed a formal inter faith Pattern for Peace. Vice Admiral Jesse B Oldendorf said ships under Admiral Kincaids Luzon attack force faced the hardest bombardment yet as American troops landed at Lingayen gulf. He noted three days of constant air attack and 100 Japanese planes in the Jan 6 assault.
A government petition for a temporary injunction to bar Montgomery Ward and Company from interfering with Army operation of 16 seized properties was adjourned by Federal Judge Philip L. Sullivan after hearings. Solicitor General Charles Fahy argued Ward’s resistance to War Labor Board directives risked the federal wage stabilization program and wartime stability.
Three pro administration advocates for a strong international peace organization Hatch Hill and Lucas were selected by the Democratic steering committee to join the Senate foreign relations committee. They take seats vacated by Reynolds Gillette and Clark after elections and retirements.
A U.S. dispatch reports December losses of Allied merchant ships due to German U-boat activity rose, signaling the war in Europe is far from over. President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill released a joint statement noting intensified Atlantic U-boat operations after a lull, with longer December nights aiding wolfpack activity and citing a recent landing of enemy agents on the Maine coast as further evidence of the undersea threat.
Washington January 9 Senate selects Elbert Thomas as chairman of military affairs replacing Reynolds who did not seek re election. Thomas resigns education and labor chair with Murray succeeding him. New assignments include Connally Downey Moses Hoey in Agriculture McFarland Taylor Fulbright in Banking Chandler Magnuson McClellan in Commerce Wagner Stewart in Military affairs.
Songstress Judy Garland announced plans to marry director Ben Vincent Minnelli, with whom she worked on her latest picture, early next fall.
United Press report by Arthur Feldman says General MacArthur landed on Luzon aboard an assault craft in bright sun. He rode the craft to the beach with Sutherland and Filipino scouts, spoke with troops, and watched a foxhole digger before touring the beachhead.
An Army Boeing Stratocruiser established a new transcontinental speed record by flying from Seattle to Washington, D. C., in six hours and nine minutes, averaging about 380 miles per hour Tuesday night.
Butte area expects partly to mostly cloudy skies Wednesday and Wednesday night with little temperature change. High around 45 and low near 25. Tuesday's highs in the mid 40s and lows in the mid 20s. West of the divide increases in cloudiness with continued warmth. east of the divide shows partial clearing and cooler conditions on Wednesday.
Helena January 9 With decks cleared for action the 29th Montana legislative assembly prepared for its 60 day session. Senate standing committees were named and Speaker George O Connors announced House committee memberships. Three bills had been introduced in the House and notices of about half a dozen more were received, including two Senate proposals to create and fund public cemetery districts.
A massive fleet of about 800 ships led by Vice Admiral Kincaid faced a fierce Japanese air assault during the Luzon landing operations. Allied planes and ships reportedly downed at least 79 enemy aircraft while one midget submarine was rammed and sunk by a destroyer. The invasion proceeded with some losses but without compromising overall operations.
Allied forces under General Douglas MacArthur landed on Luzon from an 800 ship armada and seized a 15 mile beachhead on Lingayen gulf amid heavy bombardment. Requiring only 9:30 a.m. landings, American troops pushed inland with engineers and airfield crews beginning immediate airstrip construction. The operation, led by Lt. Gen. Walter Krueger, marks the next major push toward Manila and follows prior invasions at Leyte and Mindanao with significant air and naval support.
Tokyo radio acknowledged the American invasion of Luzon and said U S forces began landing at San Fabian and other Lingayen gulf points. The broadcast noted Japanese air and ground forces engaging the enemy in sanguinary fighting. United Press received the report in San Francisco.
The Interstate Commerce Commission reported that excessive speed on a sharp curve caused the Challenger train wreck near Colfax California last November 8. The Southern Pacific passenger service was involved in the incident.
