Helsinki reports a lull on all fronts as Russian invaders, blamed for heavy losses, appear exhausted for the moment. Finnish officials say Moscow may regroup for a new assault, while defenders claim victory in several engagements.
German aircraft attacked British coastal waters and sank the liner Dunbar Castle after she hit a mine off England. At least six ships were lost or damaged, with 33 dead or missing including crew and passengers. One Danish tender was badly damaged. the admiralty listed several vessels sunk or crippled.
Moscow reports the Red Army pulled back several kilometers east of Suomensalmi amid heavy fighting on the Finnish eastern front. Officials say the retreat followed intensified combat in the sector and occurred early today.
The Finnish army issued its shortest communique noting land operations were quiet on January 8 apart from patrol and artillery activity on both sides. The Red Army offensive was expected to continue for some time according to the report.
The FBI joined the probe into the slaying of Mrs. Dick Law in Aberdeen Washington amid possible links to the Charles Mattson kidnapping and murder. Prosecutor Stanley Krause notes similar brutality could guide federal investigators joining local and state authorities.

The Silver Bow Area council of the Boy Scouts of America elected its new president last night, succeeding F. W. Strandberg of Butte. The new leader was vice president of the Scouting organization and longtime chairman of the Court of Honor committee.

Reardon Plumbing and Heating Co. awarded Madison ventilating 1,095 and heating 2,190 after 575 stocker deduction. Janitor duties rules adopted. Butte Art Assn and St Ann School facility use approved. Blaine school rewiring noted.
Senator Wheeler and Representative O Conn or press for halting heavy foreign metal imports with emphasis on zinc to protect Montana miners in Butte from unemployment and price declines. Wheeler asks Hull to act citing a developing zinc industry crisis and rising import volumes.
Partly to cloudy conditions reported for Montana on Wednesday and Thursday. Snow is expected on Thursday especially in the western portion, with temperatures turning colder Thursday.
Prime Minister Chamberlain told a Mansion House luncheon the war will enter a far harsher stage, but he urged hope in a postwar federation built on British French cooperation. He spoke amid cabinet shifts with Churchill rising in influence and Hore Belisha's removal noted.

Coaches and players across 11 divisions will receive assignments, with the official campaign planned January 22 to 26 and a $23 000 goal.
The Schooner Spindrift carrying a treasure expedition reportedly missing off Central America. It aimed to raise a claimed $60,000,000 treasure from Cocos Island near Costa Rica, with Charles and James Forbes aboard led by Captain Hugh Davenport and Captain Jack Harris.
A veteran civic campaigner linked to the Chamber of Commerce drive reported a full team of workers yesterday marking his ongoing leadership in more than 100 campaigns across Butte. He has consistently taken prominent roles in civic and other organizations.
Mrs Ed Shea was re elected president of the Camp Fire Girls Guardian association last night. Mrs Leah Makinson was chosen vice president and Mrs C J Kelly was re elected secretary. Miss Katie McMullen was re elected treasurer and Mrs Alice Helstrom was named assistant treasurer. Meeting continued on page 2 column 2.
The United States court of appeals reversed an NLRB order directing Inland Steel to bargain with the CIO and to put any agreement in writing. It held collective bargaining is mandatory but not the obligation to sign a written contract. The case goes back to the NLRB for a new hearing. the panel criticized the board for bias and for trying the agency as prosecutor, judge, and executor.
President Roosevelt told reporters he spoke with Lutheran Adventist and Baptist leaders about peace ideas but he said the remarks could not be treated as definite peace terms. He asked church spokesmen not to reveal details. The religious leaders said they felt hope for practical momentum by spring.
American Legion hall hosted the annual entertainment of Silver Bow post past commanders by Legion auxiliary past presidents. Chairwoman Mrs. J. L. Shugert led the event with ten past commanders and 13 past presidents in a ceremonial march and torchlit display. Five new auxiliary members were initiated.
