A mother, her daughter, and an unborn son die after automobiles collide at a rail crossing. A cesarean operation is attempted but fails to save the baby. The crashes also injure six others as authorities investigate the sequence of events and safety at the crossing.
Rebel columns in Teruel, Aragon, launch heavy attacks north of the city in a bid to break Loyalist lines. From Celedas, insurgent guns shell the former stronghold as the fight for Teruel continues with heavy losses on both sides. Meanwhile Indiana reports two fatal railroad crossing crashes killing eight and injuring six, including a bus collision at Anderson and a Waldron train tragedy near Shelbyville.
Washington January 9 administration leaders focused on stopping Ludlow’s proposed constitutional amendment for a people’s vote before any entry into war. Representative Boland said passage was unlikely as House leadership prepared to decide on taking up the measure.

In Bakersfield California on January 9 UP reporter E J Roach 31 president of the American Cement Pipe and Steel company of Salem Oregon was killed and ten others were injured when a highway collision involving ten automobiles occurred in a spectacular crash.
Sidney Goldstein, 24, a Marine private, rode a Secretary of War plane to Denver yesterday and did not report at his Idaho station by furlough end. Lacking air space, he turned in at Denver that night and then proceeded to San Pedro, where Captain C E Shepard said he would not be in trouble for the late arrival.
Northwest Airlines pilots Hale and Hamas set a Salt Lake City to Seattle speed record, flying Seattle to Butte in 2 hours 33 minutes at 255 mph. Western Air Express pilots Nelson and Cavil flew Butte to Salt Lake City in 2 hours 39 minutes at 233 mph, non stop, beating 209 mph prior. Langley Field report notes Robert Olds piloted a 16 ton bombing plane from March Field to Langley in 11 hours 1 minute.
Weather in Butte yesterday showed a low of three above and a high near 30, continuing a bitter trend from January reports. Across the Midwest a heavy snowstorm disrupted travel with five inches forecast in Chicago and numerous flight cancellations while rail service stayed on schedule.
Capt. Edwin J. Gilmore, 23, Salvation Army, was found beaten and unconscious on a highway near Sausalito California. He said he was robbed of 330 dollars. Doctors reported his condition critical at the hospital.
Eddie W. Boone, 27, died in a Compton house fire after residents forced entry to retrieve him from a smoke filled living room. Fire officials believe the blaze began when he slept on the divan with a lit cigarette.
Washington January 9 Justice Benjamin N Cardozo has suffered several alarming heart attacks in the past days and will remain abed for some time his physician said The 67 year old justice who has supported Roosevelt policies has been ill about a month two heart specialists were called in and shingles weakened him causing the attacks and confinement from court sessions.
In Geneva on January 9 a joint Anglo French declaration opening the council session on January 17 is read as edging toward removing the League of Nations penal clauses notably sanctions. Secretary General Avenel reportedly travels to London and Paris to finalize the declaration as smaller powers are urged to approve the abandonment of Article XVI.
