President Truman warned demobilization proceeds only as fast as overseas troop needs permit. He cited high discharge totals across Army Navy Marines and Coast Guard and said the “inescapable need” abroad shapes timing. Congressmen vow probes as overseas pressures push for faster homecomings.
Rev Father Hoff announced the parish men's group secured Senator B K Wheeler as speaker for a Friday 8 pm program in the parish center open to the public. Elmer Shea, county court clerk, chairs the executive committee. Wheeler will discuss The Foreign Affairs of the United States during his Treasure State visit.
Eight year old Jerry Hodson a polio victim was flown by plane to a Billings hospital where doctors believe the disease may be arrested in its early stages. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs Blaine Hodson of Chinook. The pilot was Mac C Miller of Chinook a former Army transport flyer. Dr A S Hoon of Chinook said it was the first infantile paralysis case reported in this area in many years.
The Manila Daily Courier reports a three hour gun battle between American Negro and white soldiers in the suburbs of Manila. No casualties occurred as guards inside a depot repelled an armed Negro force after Sgt Russell Brian killed a soldier removing Army clothing.
Tokyo cabinet approves imperial ordinance banning Rightist societies and debates legalizing exclusion of ultra nationalists from public office. Premier Shidehara recuperating from pneumonia and unlikely to attend meetings for days. Allied HQ says Japan likely barred to American business for months as doors stay closed.

Sgt Eugene Kelly returned from service in the European theater and landed Tuesday in New York aboard the Santa Marta, per the Associated Press. In Memphis Tennessee an infant boy Freddie J. Goss aged one died at 2 30 p m after an apparent bludgeoning as his mother I T Goss aged 37 and her three year old son Sammie suffered skull fractures and lacerations. The trio were found near their burned ruins shortly before noon with Deputy Sheriff R K Land stating the attack was with a blunt instrument and Sheriff Oliver Perry promising an investigation with no further details.
Thousands of Kentuckians fled from rising Cumberland and Big Sandy rivers as floods spread destruction. Across the Southeast, hundreds were marooned while fatalities mounted with two reported deaths in Kentucky and others drowning in Tennessee and nearby states as authorities warned of extensive damage and blocked roads.
An 18 year old girl in Forsyth was held after a coroner's jury found she shot and killed her 46 year old father in a family quarrel. County Attorney J J McIntosh would not say if charges would be filed. The father of six died immediately from a heart wound after an argument with relatives. Sheriff George E Burns noted frequent family quarrels and a difficult home life.
Bermuda's legislature deleted a clause prohibiting general motor car use from a new act, legalizing widespread automobile use in the colony.
Butte prepares for its 27th annual municipal skating carnival to be held at Clark Park January 19 and 20. John Lindquist chairs the planning committee with Walter Kinared Eddie Gerry Dr C S Renouard and Frank Doherty. Mayor Barry O Leary leads as general chairman for the rink event. Over 300 students from city public and parochial schools will skate in many tests. Entries are due January 10 to William Sweet carnival secretary and YMCA athletic director. George Tippett is city engineer and handled entry mailings. Additional committees include Butte schools Lowell W Johnson George Haney Rev J A Rooney Sister Mary Josephine Brother J D O Dwyer and others.
Chester Z. Lukaszkiewicz 63 Polish author and newspaper correspondent died after a weeklong illness in Chicago. Emigrated from Poland 30 years ago, he wrote 54 volumes on Polish history and Polish life in the United States. He was Chicago editor of Ameryka Echo, a weekly in Toledo, Ohio.
The forecast calls for clear to partly cloudy skies in Butte on Wednesday and Wednesday night with a slight drop in temperatures. Highs range from 25 Wednesday with a Tuesday low of 15 and a 31 high, while Montana west of the divide sees 75 to 40 for Wednesday and east of the divide 35 to 45 with partly cloudy skies.
Stockholders of three Butte banks held their annual meetings Tuesday afternoon. Directors for the ensuing year were elected by each group. Metals Bank and Trust Company and Miners National Bank later organized and selected officers. First National Bank will organize its board later. Elected at First National Bank were Andrew J. Davis Jr, Mrs. Helen M. Davis, Mrs. Ruth D. Kroger, James A. Poore and George A. Hill. Re-elected at Miners National Bank were A. J. Lochrie, W A. Kemper, H. A. Kenck, T. J. Fenlon and John B. Amos. The board will be six directors.
June Mac Donnald aged 20 Rex 12 and Donnald Hammond 19 were rescued after two nights stranded in Lassen National Forest. They were spotted by Merle Larson near Lake Helen and airlifted as rescuers cleared a six mile path to Mineral. All three were on their feet and reported only hunger and exposure.
Dr Stephen S Wise contends a majority in the United States and England favor a Jewish homeland in Palestine. He and Dr Emanuel Neumann spoke to the Anglo American commission on Palestine and Jewish issues, noting political dissent may exist in England.
President Truman lauded General Henry H. Arnold calling him a genius for directing the world’s mightiest air armada to victory in World War I. Arnold received two medals for his leadership.
