A Wyoming senator urges delaying trade treaties until Congress can discuss them fully. Protests on tariff concessions and inclusion of wool in articles are noted as part of the campaign for a no compromise policy, with broader calls for congressional review.
Senator O Mahoney Democrat Wyoming protests inclusion of woolen goods in negotiations with Great Britain. He introduces a bill requiring 30 days notice before any trade agreement proclamation and argues that treaties should be ratified by the Senate. He says concessions will not harm any agricultural field and notes State Department keeps the letter of agreements without broad protections.
In Wilmington Delaware three convicts were strapped to a post and whipped with a cat o nine tails in a New Castle prison yard renewal of a historic punishment. Raymond Shewbrook 21 cried out as twenty lashes fell. David Attaviani 21 showed little pain after ten lashes. Arthur Spain 45 received five lashes for robbery and larceny.
London reports Japan demands more control in Shanghai and attacks on British subjects. Officials express concern that Japanese military leaders seek to eject western powers from China while the foreign office defers to Shanghai for handling British policemen incidents. Prime Minister Chamberlain plans a cabinet review of the Chinese crisis with ministers and diplomat Sir Hughe Knatchbull-Hugessen.
In Kansas City Kansas on January 8 U P reporter recounts U S Secretary of War Woodring sharing a flight with Marine Private Sidney Goldstein who hailed him at Fairfax airport seeking a ride to Denver en route to report aboard the U S Idaho. Woodring offered a lift and the plane landed in Denver where Goldstein continued to seek transport.
Reports from Shanghai indicate foreign and Chinese fears after a Japanese fleet arrived off Tsingtao. French officials in Shanghai prepared to protest Japan over clashes with police in the French concession. French forces moved armored cars to the Nantao border as tensions rose.
Partly cloudy Sunday and Monday across Montana with unsettled conditions in the west and cooler air east of the divide Sunday.
More than 17,000 spectators toured the new Butte high school yesterday with 17,232 residents passing through between 1 and 9 pm. Senior class guides led tours of classrooms, auditorium, gym, labs, shops, cafeteria, and the domestic science apartment as Washington Junior High students and recent graduates joined the event. Pred B. Taylor praised public interest and thanked teachers, janitors, and students for their cooperation.
The four division teams for the Chamber of Commerce drive aim to raise 22 000 in Butte. The full organization includes 162 superintendents foremen and other workers meeting Tuesday at 7 30 p m at the chamber to plan and assign tasks. The first report is set for Jan 17 at a community luncheon at the Finlen hotel with Dr Curtis Wilson as speaker.
The loyalist forces reported a decisive shift in the Teruel battle as rebel lines broke on all sectors. Over 2,200 exhausted rebels surrendered from Teruel's old city, weakening the insurgent Aragon army and prompting desertions and retreat by Requetes and Italian auxiliaries.
Montana parents respond to a Kansas state record claim by submitting eight month old babies for weight measurement. Mr and Mrs James Murphy of Butte report their son weighs 32 pounds. Mr and Mrs George Fisher of Anaconda report a son weighing 28 pounds. Another mother claims a seven to eight month old baby at 27 and a half pounds. Doctors note normal eight month weights around 20 pounds.
In Park county southern hunting country near Gardiner and Jardine about 200 elk were counted with no hunters killed. Sheriff Darroch said the season closes early after heavy hunting with 3,000 sportsmen present and road travel blocked for hours. A Lewistown man suffered a minor cheek wound from a stray bullet. no serious injuries reported. A young woman hunted near a baby strapped beside her, but no elk was taken. The season was cut short by the fish and game commission due to excess kills.
Peter Orrestad an engineer at the Russell refinery was found dead yesterday near the refinery after apparently falling from a tank car on railway tracks. Thor Orrestad his son and fellow employee discovered the body. A Norwegian native and longtime resident of Butte he belonged to Gold Hill Lutheran church and was survived by his wife Ingbor and four daughters.
James H. Rowe of Butte elected acting president of Montanans Inc after C R McClave of Great Falls resigned to focus on private business. McClave remains a director as Rowe leads until the April annual meeting. The board also created state wide committees on reclamation and conservation.
Arthur F. Lamey Havre attorney voiced a call for tolerant patient effort and harmonious cooperation among Americans at a Jackson day banquet in the Finlen hotel. About 200 Democrats from five western Montana counties attended as Dr. T. J. B. Shanley served as toastmaster and noted the dinners aim to reduce the Democratic National Committee debt.
Spokane robbery suspect Bert Galbrick was arrested by FBI agents in Salt Lake City at 2 a.m. on a fugitive complaint. The Spokane, Washington bank robbery charge led to the arrest announced later today.
President Roosevelt warned in a Jackson Day address that a minority of business leaders bankers and industrialists seek to retain autocratic control of the economy. He pledged cooperation with all who will help eradicate evils from undue influence and urged national unity.

The President spoke at the annual dinner celebrating Andrew Jackson's New Orleans victory. His remarks were broadcast by radio to Democratic gatherings nationwide, stressing the White House door is always open to discuss economic power and fair business practices.
In Billings Gov. Roy E. Ayers spoke at a Jackson day dinner detailing 1937 achievements and 1938 aims. He proposed retiring all bonded indebtedness, wiping out the general fund overdraft, and recommending elimination of state property taxes for general fund purposes.
Hundreds attend public funeral services for John C. Kelley the prosecutor known for the Massie murder case. More than 400 people fill St Patrick's cathedral before burial at Diamond Head Memorial Park as the Royal Hawaiian band plays. Kell ey died of heart disease, brother of Cornelius F. Kelley of Anaconda Copper Mining.
