Silver Bow county commissioners proposed hiring one more deputy to operate a second license plate window and issue driving permits. Treasurer Phemia McPhail refused the offer, insisting two deputies are needed. Motorists staged a line waiting strike as issuance remained slow and no driving permits had yet been issued. A giant B-50 bomber with 11 crewmen aboard plunged into Choctawhatchee Bay shortly after takeoff from Eglin Air Force Base. Nine men were rescued by life rafts as the blustery sea tossed them in life jackets. two crew members remained unaccounted, beling believed pinned inside the plane. The improved B-50 sank near the field during a local test flight.

A pre dawn blaze in a two story Missoula home killed five of Leo Molenda and Mary Malenda's 12 children. Colleen Gladys 13 Stanley 10 Beverly 7 Carol 6 and Sharon 5 perished. James Parrish saved Linda Molenda 17 months and escaped with six other children. The cause is under investigation but officials suspect an overheated stove in near zero weather.

The FBI identified the mysterious stranger as Richard Ellis Boone, 28, of Enola Pennsylvania. Fingerprints supplied by Alice authorities matched a 1940 FBI file card showing Boone born October 28 1921 in Harrisburg and last listed at 100 Susquehanna Avenue Enola. No later records existed.
County commissioners approved 1684.75 in bills for painting cleaning and furnishing department one court chambers charged against the burial of soldiers fund. Judge McClernan had earlier ordered the board to show cause why they should not be removed for willful neglect of duty in failing to pay the claims. In Rome on January 6 a circus lioness Saida bit off trainer Oscar Konyet s nose and much of his chin, gravely injuring the American, as onlookers requested staff to pull him free. The second incident with Saida followed a prior Naples show in which she severed most of his left hand.
Two Interstate Commerce Commission examiners Samuel R. Diamondson and Charles W. Berry recommended granting Railway Express a 10 percent increase in first and second class less than carload rates. If approved, it would be the fourth express price hike since World War II, affecting general merchandise shipments in small quantities and edible products.
Washington dispatch reports North Atlantic pact nations formally adopting broad plans to defend Western Europe against possible Soviet attack. Detroit police and FBI grilled William Thomas, 58, who found a dynamite charge at the CIO United Automobile Workers headquarters and admitted Friday that his abduction story was false. He said he was in a bad mental state after the December dynamite incident and had been working overtime with little sleep. He denied knowledge of the Reuther assassination plots.
21 year old Raymond Hamad died after a hitchhiking ride in a Vancouver police car. He drew a gun on two constables, who were distracted briefly by a passing motorist before Constable Eburne shot him at close range. Hamad died at Vancouver General Hospital.
