Palen Hearing Set by Montana Pardon Board
The Montana pardon board set January for a hearing on commutation of Clifford Palen’s death sentence. Palen, a 11 year old railroad brakeman and father of seven, killed Frank Cavanaugh in Gren Dive, Montana, on July 3, 1544. A 60 day stay of execution was granted and Gov. Ford has recommended clemency. Palen was condemned to hang January 16.

Polish woman on murder charge tied to Conner death
Mrs Jadwiga Curtin a 20 year old Polish war bride of Havre Montana will stand trial January 20 for murder in the death of Palo Alto dairy man George Conner age 25. She pleaded innocent and is accused of shooting him in a saloon row. Also charged with robbery of a Stanford student Feb 13 is Howard Butham of Reedley California. Durham, freed in a related charge, was jailed for intoxication when Conner was slain.

Five Babies Born to Five Butte Couples at St Jane’s
Three girls and two boys were born to five Butte couples in St Jane’s hospital Tuesday. The girls’ parents are Mr and Mrs Dan Goles, Mr and Mrs James Jeffers, and Mr and Mrs James Hastie. The boys’ parents are Mr and Mrs Joseph Anzik and Mr and Mrs Don Sullivan. Richard Kirby of Butte died Tuesday night in a local hospital. he lived at 1134 West Broadway and was a longtime Butte resident and blacksmith. He is survived by four brothers and three sisters in law, two brothers in law and sisters, and several nephews and nieces. The body is at Duggan’s Merrill mortuary.

Helena January 6 Funeral services were held here Tuesday for J. P. Hartmiller 88 of Marysville who discovered a rich lead ore vein while naming the Mike Horse mine after his horse Old Mike. State Attorney General R W Bottoms ruled that no Montana law aligns with the federal Veterans Administration method of paying G I tuition at state colleges. Claude Meredith of the regional VA office asked, noting nonresident tuition rose from 25 to 100 dollars per quarter by the Montana Board of Education, which he says conflicts with state law and could bar VA payment under the G I bill of rights.
