The 30th Montana legislature organized with Republicans holding majorities as Speaker Scofield and President pro tempore Burke were chosen. Gov. Ford set to deliver biennial message at a joint session Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the House chamber.
Lt Gen Lucius D Clay new commander in chief of American forces in Europe said he would move his headquarters from Frankfurt to Berlin. He plans to confer with Gen Joseph T McNarney before reorganizing the military government. He cited a 25 percent drop in industrial output, discussed Saar frontier talks, a moratorium on foreign investments, and progress in denazification. He defended U S business presence and outlined the 90 day economic retreat plan.
French forces arrive at Hanoi and Haiphong by air and sea as the command readies an offensive to clear Viet Nam troops from the Chinese quarter. Reinforcements include the Foreign Legion and transports from Indo China. Negotiations delay the assault to safeguard civilians. Hostages and rescued civilians are reported in the area.
A blast at Air Reduction Sales in West Quincy erupted with two thousand oxygen tanks, smashing a granite building, shattering windows within half a mile, and injuring six firefighters and several locals. Plant operator Edward Gagne suffered facial burns as homes were evacuated and damage assessed.

Senator Brewster with the Republican majority was elected chairman of the Senate War Investigating committee replacing Kilgore. The panel has issued a sharp report criticizing Senator-elect Theodore Bilbo. Kilgore will remain a member of the committee.
Desert veterans arrived in Palestine from Egypt as British officers waited cabinet approval for a large scale attack on Jewish extremists. If endorsed, the operation would be the greatest in Palestine’s modern history, aiming to curb extremist attacks on troops and infrastructure. Prime Minister Attlee led four critical cabinet meetings on foreign policy with Palestine decisions expected this week.
Washington Jan 6 a bill to end immediately the wartime excise taxes estimated at 1.5 billion annually was rushed to Congress while President Truman urged a 12 month extension. Rep OToole and Rep Knutson advocate quick action as Republicans seek broader tax cuts and Truman hints at future budget messages.
President Truman has summoned Gen. George C. Marshall to Washington to report in person on the disturbed situation in China. The White House announced the envoy will probably leave Nanking by airplane Tuesday to return to the United States.
A Northwest Airlines DC-4 bound Minneapolis to Chicago burst into flames after landing at Chicago Municipal Airport. Forty one aboard escaped injury as 37 passengers and four crew members left the aircraft before it was destroyed by fire. Left landing gear collapsed on the slick runway and a broken gasoline line started a wing engine fire.
Prime Minister Alcide De Gasperi met with Secretary of State Byrnes in Washington and called the talks a good beginning for his mission to secure American economic aid.

Alphonse Rocco, hunted since New Year’s eve in the camera shooting of his former wife, was shot to death by police while crouched in a sleeping bag under a spruce tree on a hill in Patchin Hollow Schoharie county. State police and New York city detectives trapped him after he fired four shots at Trooper James H. Smith as Cpl. Hilfrank and Detective Strauss returned fire.

Three Yugoslavs were condemned to death by firing squad for supplying United States embassy attaches with information on Marshal Tito's military forces. Named are Militin Stefanovic and Branko Vovanic, both former newspapermen, and Zheljko Sushin, a former Yugoslav Army officer.
President Truman in a conciliatory State of the Union urged Congress to curb strikes and maintain wartime taxes. He proposed a 20 member study commission to study nationwide strikes and arbitration for contract disputes. He also pressed for measures on labor and a continued wartime tax structure to reduce the national debt.
