A brutal cold wave drives temperatures below zero across Butte with readings reaching 30 below by nightfall. King Winter claims a life near Choteau as Montana endures dangerous wind chills, school absences rise, and motorists abandon cars for warmth and help.
President Roosevelt addresses the Seventy-fifth Congress urging a broad view of constitutional powers to support New Deal governance. He argues against delaying essential government powers and calls for an enlightened interpretation while the Supreme Court weighs other New Deal statutes.
President Roosevelt outlined legislative goals including industry regulation through federal laws, extending neutrality policy to the Spanish Civil War, a relief appropriation to be proposed later, extending authorizations soon to expire, low cost housing and slum clearance, aid for farm tenants, social security expansion, and renewal of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation powers. The plan also seeks devaluation authority and maintaining the exchange stabilization fund.
Helena dispatch reports lawmakers prep 13 more committees and fast pass a 190000 appropriation for the session. notices of liquor law changes appear in both houses as Sen Harry Harlen proposes cutting liquor permits to 50 cents and extending state liquor stores hours. House and Senate adjourned briefly as bills move forward and weather patterns show plummeting temps across the state with below zero readings in Helena and other cities.
Labor leaders and General Motors officials narrowed a key dispute in preliminaries to talks. Evacuation of plants held by stay in strikers was seen as the obstacle with 50,000 GM workers idle in 19 plants. A UAW demand for assurances against equipment removal preceded withdrawal orders. In San Francisco the waterfront strike also faced a core issue, preferential hiring, with shipowners agreeing to talks with the masters, mates and pilots union.
The AP reports rising tensions as Britain France prepare to act over aid to Spanish factions. Nazi German Italian intervention and a proposed coastal blockade spark appeals to the League of Nations while Valencia seeks international backing. Malaga bombardment reports claim 150 killed as Madrid braces under encirclement.
In Tacoma on January 6 1930 all roads were open for the kidnapper to return Charles Mattson. Dr W W Mattson urged reporters and lawmen to curtail activity as the ransom demand of 28000 dollars loomed and the waiting vigil at the Mattson home continued.
City council at a regular session reduced the driving permit cost from one dollar to fifty cents effective January 1, 1937. Alderman Dennis Fitzpatrick introduced the ordinance. Fred Sweet was elected to fill the third ward vacancy after the death of Emund J. Sullivan and took the chair after taking the oath of office. Stanley Williams was nominated for the post. The council also planned to study the garbage disposal system with bids possible by January 20 and a new contract to start next March. The parks committee set January 30 31 for the annual grade school skating carnival at Clark's park with races and prizes.
Time and a technicality thwarted Congress in stopping munitions shipments to Spain as an embargo sped through both Houses. A Spanish steamer laden with airplanes departed New York, while western reclamation debates split Congress over funding for irrigation projects and proposed limits.
Irene Armstrong the grandmother mayor of Daytona Beach used sub machine guns to resist state power. Governor Fred Cone revoked a prior order by retiring Governor Schultz that aimed to remove her and the city administration. Armstrong then withdrew armed police from City Hall and called for an end to litigation returning municipal business to normal.
J. J. Swingley, 82, of Livingston, obtained a marriage license from Elmer Shea, clerk of the court, in Silver Bow county. His bride-to-be, Nannie J. Smith of Bozeman, listed 65. Swingley quipped that "it's never too late to marry."
Great Falls Jan. 6 Warden president of the National Reclamation association announces F. O. Hagie of Yakima Washington as executive secretary with headquarters in Washington DC. Board of directors from 14 western states approves. First step in 1936 program to spend up to 30000 to gather information on federal contributions and project results. Hagie previously led Yakima Chamber of Commerce and also served as chamber secretary at Sandpoint Idaho and Walla Walla Washington.
An official Tycos thermometer at Jensen Drug Store on South Montana tracked subzero readings all day. Morning starts at 8:00 with 26 below, rising to 20 at 9, 16 at 10, and 13 at 11, then 7:00 p.m. shows 22 below and 9:00 p.m. around 28 below, ending near 10:00 p.m. at 26.2 below.
Hollywood and the comedienne Martha Raye revealed she is engaged to Jerry Hopper, cousin of Glenda Farrell and studio music department assistant. No wedding date has been set.
J J Lynch a former jurist in Silver Bow county for 26 years returned to the bench yesterday succeeding Judge Frank L Riley who retires after two terms. He received his commission from Governor Roy Ayers and named Joseph V Flaherty as official court reporter. He and Judge Downey also appointed E E Crnich as chief probation officer to replace W D Kelly. Crnich serves at the district courts pleasure.
