Washington reports a tense start as Democratic leaders foresee a long session with the $8 billion budget message due tomorrow. Senator Clark and Huey Long prepare to clash for floor access to press Nye committee munition inquiry.
The Columbian Squires celebrate their first anniversary with 34 new initiates, a banquet, and entertainment at the Knights of Columbus lodge hall. Tom Jovick, grand knight of Butte council, acted as toastmaster as members from Deer Lodge, Helena and Anaconda attended. The group now exceeds 100 members and plans to establish a second circle in Helena this month.
Betty Gow, last Lindbergh baby witness alive, sett to testify tomorrow in the Hauptmann kidnapping trial. Defense seeks to shift blame while Gow faces cross examination by Edward J. Reilly. The nursery maid’s calm demeanor on March 1, 1932 is under scrutiny as she recounts finding the crib empty.
In a Democratic caucus at Helena a progressive bloc backed Armington’s William P. Pilgeram for speaker of the Montana House. Joe Metlen of Beaverhead placed second and Herbert Haight of Fergus withdrew after denouncing maneuvers. Vote totals were Pilgeram 42, Metlen 19, Claude Gray 7. Byrne of Toole was named majority floor leader with H. D. Rolph of Liberty noted as a potential rival.
Two communists arrested near Aspern aerodrome confessed an unsuccessful plot to kill Vice Chancellor Prince Ernest Rudiger von Starhemberg. The attack at noon used his touring car. a Heimwehr member named Selle was wounded. Police hold the suspects for investigation as the government tightens controls amid fascist aligned tensions.
The first annual Montana winter carnival will run January 12 through January 20 in Anaconda. Spectacular ski jump at Sheep Gulch and a new toboggan slide near the athletic field promise speed and danger as key draws. Hundreds of Butte residents have already viewed the attractions.
Representative Higgins of Massachusetts said he will introduce a House resolution calling for the United States to withdraw from Mexico and for the removal of Ambassador Daniels. He cites the Mexican government's closing of Catholic schools and expulsion of priests and argues Daniels failed to protest.

Coast guard said 45 to 55 crew members were ashore. El Oceano saved 37 passengers and 30 crew. Peten and El Oceano took refugees to Miami with Havana master awaiting landing in Havana.
Great Falls January 6. Andrew Larson 55 of Geraldine died in a Great Falls hospital after a Saturday collision with a taxicab driven by Jack Little. Police report says Larson stepped from a car into the taxi’s path, becoming the city’s first auto accident fatality of 1935 and the state's second.
The weather man scrambled reports across the Rockies with Montana enjoying sun and 48 degrees at Helena while New Mexico saw snowstorms and Albuquerque at 28 degrees. Gallup had a half inch of snow and western mountains up to six inches. Colorado and Wyoming reported unseasonably warm spells with Denver at 61 and Cheyenne at 54.
Butte’s high temperature yesterday reached 38 degrees at the airport with a 24 hour low of 22. Skies remained overcast and snow was expected but did not develop.
In Saarbrucken the crowd gathered on hilltops for a pro Germany return of the Saar. Police estimate about 200,000 reached the hilltop amid snow and rain while other marchers filled nearby streets. The program featured songs and two speeches as marchers stood in cold water.
