The consumer price index for coffee rose through 1976 to 218.3 as an 11 month average, exceeding 200 for the first time and marking more than a twofold increase since the 1967 base. Past yearly averages were 119.4 in 1972, 135.0 in 1973, 160.5 in 1974, and 172.9 in 1975.
Brazil earned 2.32 billion dollars from coffee exports in 1976 on 15.6 million bags, up from 934.1 million on 14.6 million bags. The Brazilian Coffee Institute, a government agency, regulated exports to aid growers after the 1975 Parana frost and holds 22.4 million bags in stock. In December 1976 exports reached 2.7 million bags generating 530 million dollars. The 1976–77 harvest is projected at about 13 million bags.

Donald Langlois 62 listed his wife Arlene as deceased on a marriage certificate last week then killed her the next day, police say. He married Christine Floyd, 59, of Gloversville about 2 p.m. Friday and honeymooned in Florida before Arlene’s body was found in a car trunk Sunday. Langlois was arrested Tuesday on second degree murder charges and held for extradition to New York.
