The New York Times finds growing hardship as millions struggle to pay fuel bills and utilities cut off gas electricity and oil despite varying patterns. Some customers go without heat. others use propane coal or wood with limited tracking and welfare access remains low.
President Ford appoints an eight member commission led by Vice President Rockefeller to investigate CIA related allegations. The panel includes John Connor Douglas Dillon Erwin Griswold Ronald Reagan and Lyman Lemonitzer with April 4 as the report deadline and members chosen for their independence from the agency.
The piece notes Edgar Shannon Jr. and Joseph Kirkland retiring from top roles at UVA and AFL-CIO respectively. Edward Martin 18 and James Martin 15 died in a Saturday morning car crash three miles west of Divide on Highway 43. They lived with sister and brother in law Mr and Mrs George Bayne at 2304 Hancock. Edward born March 21 1956 in the Ancon Canal Zone was Army private on leave from Fort Bragg. James born December 11 1959 at Fort Monmouth was a Butte High School student. They are survived by their father Edward Jr in the Bahamas and sisters Barbara Lodge Great Falls and Lora Parr Louisiana. Burial planned in McFall Missouri.
A British bulk carrier Lake Illawarra hit the Tasman Bridge over the Derwent River in Hobart Tasmania sank in 80 feet of water ten minutes after impact. Four cars plunged from the damaged span and at least six people were killed with 34 of 42 crew rescued and several hospitalized. Rescue efforts continue for eight missing crew members as authorities report a lifeboat also sank and vehicles onshore detoured to another bridge.
In a British Medical Journal report, doctors describe haemoperfusion using coconut shell charcoal to cleanse toxins from blood. They cite a 31 year old who took 167 sleeping pills with whisky and survived after seven hours, plus several other overdose cases with mixed outcomes.
Congressional leaders signaled plans for independent investigations of the CIA. Sen. Hugh Scott says a panel report due by April will trigger further action by the Nedzi subcommittee in the House and the Stennis armed services panel.
North Vietnamese forces bombarded Phuoc Binh City for a fifth day with a thousand mortar rounds. Saigon says radio communications remain intact despite the shelling. Civilians were killed near the western Saigon area and at the Biehn Hoa air base complex 15 miles northeast. One soldier was killed and 11 wounded.
Everton Poindexter 74 of New York City died Jan 1 from a cerebral hemorrhage in Bridgeport Conn hospital. Born in Dillon 1900 he was son of Joseph Poindexter Hawaii governor 1934-42. He led Commodity Brokers Inc and donated Montana art to the University and Historical Society of Helena.
Billy Hudecek, 11, from Livingston, suffers kidney failure requiring 12 hour dialysis daily while awaiting a donor and a future kidney transplant. He attends Livingston Public School with high grades, remains active in 4H, and travels to Helena or Seattle for treatment as his family adapts to the evolving need.
The Montana Standard announces a weekly series starting Jan 13 1976 featuring memorable AP photographs from war sports politics and historic moments. The feature promises graphic historic images and urges clipping for a scrapbook for youths interested in history or photography.
Houston Astros pitcher Don Wilson was found dead in his home in Houston. Wilson's 5-year-old son also died in the house. Ski jumper Jeff Wright, 22, died from injuries in an accident at a Battleboro ski meet in the Virgin Islands. Details on Page 8.

He faces a $9,191 U.S. customs bill and an imminent Thai auction over the items, including a deactivated submachine gun and a redwood walking stick whittled by an ancestor. Davis, deemed 30 percent disabled, argues Army misinterpreted regulations and seeks return of his medals and tools to secure work as an aircraft mechanic while living on a military pension.
